Anyone have experience with Dunlop Winter Sport 3D? They are BMW star marked, and with my OEM BMW wheels obviously maintains the 'factory recommended fit', but they do seem to be a step down from the Winter Sport 4D which is just over the fitment I am comfortable with and also a slight step down from the Nokians.

Admittedly, quibbling over a few %, but statistics matter! wink

edit: Does anyone know the difference between Dunlop's Winter Sport 3D/4D range and their Winter Sport M3 range?

I believe the M3 range is even older than the 3D.

If it were my choice, I'd certainly be choosing the newer tyre over the older, * marked pattern.

I've been using Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme 225x40x18 on mine, had my second set last winter, they seem really good. They'll have to go on soon as my current set of tyres are nearly done.

Thought i'd update my findings so far. Getting close to 500 miles on them and definite improvement. To be fair, what didn't help my initial thoughts were partly down to the windy weather that has been battering me side on going up and down the M6/M55 and that I tend to drive at mummbleLeptons which I don't think these are good for.

I still don't have the confidence to fly across the overpass that links the M6 to the M55 that I used to...

So they are improving and I hope when the temps do drop that they continue to improve.

No affect on MPG and I'd say they are quieter, but that's comparing them against the very worn old ones.

Bring on the snow!!!!!
I've had mine on for nearly two weeks now and have put over 500 miles on them. They don't feel so squidgy, but I see what you mean about the confidence thing. I am taking it a bit more steady whilst it's warm as I don't want to chew them up too.

The cold, when it finally gets here, should see them come into their own. smile

Thanks jon, the only issue I have is the Winter Sport 3D comes in the perfect size (245/45/18, runflat) but the closest the 4D comes is 245/40/18 (non runflat) or 245/50/18 (runflat)....so going with the 4D & runflat would mean 245/50/18 and having the speedo under-read by 3.8% OR the 245/40 and have the speedo over-read by 3.8% (better...) but no runflat.

My dilemma is whether the better generation of tyre is worth speedo error.

One thing to consider is how much the speedo currently over-reads compared to the true speed. You might find that a reduction due to a larger tyre will make it more accurate.

Well... put the winters on a couple of days ago even though it was 16c the following morning.

However, had to de-ice the car this morning!

At least it should pass the MOT on Fri now the summer slicks have been removed!

Car sounds so much quieter inside with a much smoother ride thanks to dropping a size smile

I'm sure the tyres will need to 'bed-in' but not noticed any lack of grip.

Cheers

Mine are still sat in the loft. I had decided 01st November was 'D-Day', but I think it's still too warm.

Had to fit 2 of these last year as Continentals were not available. They seemed ok but we had no snow to really test them, however the wear rate was not as good as the Conti's.

Have the same with the summer tyres as well. Normally put Conti summer sports on and these usually give about 35k on the rears and 50k plus on the fronts. The Dunlop sport max are almost down to the wear marker on the rear after 20k miles, so not good.

Will be fitting a full new set of Conti winters next week.

Well I was quite impressed with the ContiVikingContacts on the hire car this afternoon on fresh snow which isn't usually too bad but it was a bloody steep hill. No idea where they sit kin Contis range as Google just turns up loads of sites in Norwegian.

That's when I plan to put mine on, shall we do the before and after pictures again this year?
Actually its gone very warm again! I think I'll just wait till the mornings are consistently at 6 degrees or so. Plus I'm having a more relaxed TC/ESP fitted in mid november and I intend to have some fun with it, best get it out of my system with the summers on as not to chew up my winters wink
Agreed, not going to bother this weekend.

Cold recently in the mornings, positively warm come evenings. Bit weird to be honest.

Whats the rush anyway, it's all physiological, or maybe I just want a softer ride!

Mine will be on when the first salt goes down, not this weekend though it's to be tropical apparently.

Mine will be going on at the end of November. It is getting colder but I have been changing them at this time of year for the past 5 years and it has seemed to worked well enough.

Taken my Elise to Romania and its mandatory here or a whacking big fine. Been looking at the prices of UK tyres compared to here. Wish I'd got them in the UK!!

4 Pirelli sottozero arrived today, part-worns with 6mm tread for just over £60 each. Will have them fitted to spare set of wheels at the weekend but as I'm still mostly wearing shorts it may be some time before they actually get fitted to the car.

I'm delaying swapping as long as I can. It's a few months of frustration at being unable to put power down so it's best kept to a minimum.

They're a nordic winter, not really suitable for the UK.
