I'm currently driving round on my winters on 15degrees roads.

Arrghh!! biggrin
Been doing that for nearly a month. smile

Had to change mine as the old ones were worn.

The recent rain has helped though as I feel they are doing a good job with standing water on the terrible roads I have to drive down.

General question for the masses:

Second hand OEM alloys or new aftermarket alloys (nothing Halfords-ey) for an E60? Have heard some horror stories about second hand alloys having cracks, but would appreciate the PH massive's experience on which is the better option.

I actually need them for summer tyres, the car has been shod in winters since very shortly after I got her.

I think my winters are going on this week. My fronts are down to 3mm (and it'll be summer 2015 before temperatures fall at this rate). I may as well get some moneys worth out of them.

Thought i'd update my findings so far. Getting close to 500 miles on them and definite improvement. To be fair, what didn't help my initial thoughts were partly down to the windy weather that has been battering me side on going up and down the M6/M55 and that I tend to drive at mummbleLeptons which I don't think these are good for.

I still don't have the confidence to fly across the overpass that links the M6 to the M55 that I used to...

So they are improving and I hope when the temps do drop that they continue to improve.

No affect on MPG and I'd say they are quieter, but that's comparing them against the very worn old ones.

Bring on the snow!!!!!
I've had mine on for nearly two weeks now and have put over 500 miles on them. They don't feel so squidgy, but I see what you mean about the confidence thing. I am taking it a bit more steady whilst it's warm as I don't want to chew them up too.

The cold, when it finally gets here, should see them come into their own. smile
And as it was 4 degrees and raining this morning, it was as if someone had swapped the Haribo wheels for some proper tyres...I cannot believe that the temperature has had such a dramatic affect. I could take the M6 to M55 flyover nearly at my previous rate. smile

9 degrees and very wet for me. Noticed that they seemed better than they have done lately. As you say, the temperature really does make a difference. smile

Having the front bushes etc. done on Friday so it should feel better anyway.

Everything points to an All-Season tyre being the best bet for the UK. Unless you regularly travel in exposed, higher parts, where you can guarantee you'll encounter prolonged periods of snow. For the vast majority of motorists, an All-Weather tyre will ensure only a small compromise over the dry/wet abilities of a full summer, whilst ensuring that should you encounter snow, you won't be stranded.

Discuss....

If your primary desire is to get from A to B without faf in all standard UK conditions*. That's the one.

(*there will always be some weather condition that the right tyre can't solve)

I bought a set of used F20 alloys with winter tyres from ebay... turns out they were E60 wheels rolleyes

2 of them have cracks and will be getting binned, 2 of them are fine if you were interested. They've been sat in my garage since last year.

I wont be buying used alloys from ebay again put it that way.

Secondhand e60 from fleabay is a good option if you get them from a good dealer. I bough mine from the main dealers on eBay at third of the price of new ones. However new oem alloys will probably be cheaper and just as good. Providing you do not need tyre pressure monitors. Only thing to add, is I brought a secondhand set of genuine BMW alloys for my e63, and when I came to sell them I got back my money +£100 smile

The other option is steels with BMW trims?

Well I was quite impressed with the ContiVikingContacts on the hire car this afternoon on fresh snow which isn't usually too bad but it was a bloody steep hill. No idea where they sit kin Contis range as Google just turns up loads of sites in Norwegian.
Were top rated winter tyre in Norway a couple of winters ago! I ran some over here in deep snow and on the TWI, they were fine. Yearly Scandinavian, stud-free winter tyre tests are here: https://www.naf.no/forbrukertester/dekktester/vint...

They're a nordic winter, not really suitable for the UK.
Well they're used on the Southerly West coast of Norway which is the same weather as Glasgow, so they might just be OK!

Don't be put off by Nordics, they're fine for the UK! My old Merc ran Nokian Hakkapelitta s nearly all year round in Scotland.

I hadn't thought about tyre pressure monitors - it does ping up on iDrive when it thinks one of the tyres has low pressure, I'd assumed that was something in-car rather than in-alloy. Can I get around it?

Steel wheels isn't on the cards (especially for the summer wheels).

I've bought 2 sets of used alloys as winter sets and had no issues.

Temperatures coming down to normal for this time of year. I'd put mine on now but I'm waiting for my assembly aids to turn up, don't want to risk ttting the brake disc or caliper without them.

More than likely you will need tpm modules in the tyres but try https://www.tpmswarehouse.co.uk/?route=account/acc...
With your reg and if required ensure they are in the secondhand listing or part of the oem deal
