Just looked up the dimensions for these, and was surprised - it's basically the same length as a 911... I've only seen a couple of f-types on the road, but they looked enormous - like an imported American car... Attractive, but clearly not scaled for our little island!

I always imagine cars like these to be the size of the last TVRs, but the F-Type is half a metre longer than a T350... Yes, it's rivals are the same(ish) size (perhaps lower and narrower), but they all seem to hide it better... The F-Type just looks big, and as a result, the details - which look good in print - look clunky and, well, American... It's not a good looking car on the road.

Weight doesn't bother me as much - it seems only Porsche know how to make an affordable sports car light - and I love the idea of a British born hot rod, but it just doesn't seem very British... My sense of the car (and that's the bit that buys things) says that's a bad thing.

But! I haven't seen a couple yet - maybe it's a different proposition. We shall see.
Funny, i don't think they look big at all!

There's a video on the Autocar website, that's if you can put up with Sutcliff's "Jack the lad" persona.

Makes anything by Porsche look really dated. Chris is right. This is the British sports car that many have been waiting for. On the road and for daily use I cannot image anyone would really notice a marginal difference in performance. Partly because you will be distracted by the noise and secondlty because it will be a real joy to be in.
Why Porsche got manufacturer of the year in the TG awards escapes me unless Hammond voted only. Jaguar are really making huge strides. Compare it to the stuff they were producing ten years ago.

I may have something that will help you with that.

Seriously, everyone's entitled to an opinion but I would say the consensus is that the F-Type is a bit of a styling home run.

Despite it's absolutely incredible looks, it's an automatic coupe not a supercar baiter. This isn't a competitor for the Nissan GTR or 911 Turbo, though it may steal some sales from those two. The fact that this can hit 60 in 4 seconds whilst looking so beautiful, with a stonking V8 soundtrack and a no doubt heavy auto transmission, loads of gadgets, big heavy comfortable armchair-like electric seats and still comply with all the Euro bullst is a brilliant achievement.

I hope they sell tens of thousands of them.

I’m really trying to love this car, but can’t see it being a timeless classic I only see generic style from the twenty tens era thats produced to sell numbers and not born from passion. A fashion car. There’s a current fad of over exaggerated sweeping lines, gaping air intakes, defusers, sound generated exhausts and celebrity designed interiors, all touched with the essence of a caricature design pen to please the public.

In twenty years time I feel these designs will instantly bring to the attention ‘ah this is a car from the twenty ten era’ and date very easily, in the same way the bolt on spoilers, stripes and digital dashboards hit the 80’s. These cars age very quickly, but we never thought this at the time.

I was most fortunate to come across one of these in British Racing Green, totally uncamoflagued, on the public roads yesterday. I cannot put across just how awesome it looks in the metal, truly stunning cloud9 it had twin pipes in the middle, a clear homage to the E-type (but two pipes short), I'm guessing that made it a V6? There was definitely an R badge on its rump.

This car will sell on looks alone, so I guess any dynamic issues will be irrelevant to most buyers. My biggest stumbling points were (are?) the interior and boot space. The latter has been addressed - but I'm still not so keen on the interior. I'm sure if I sat in one long enough I'd probably get used to it. I feel unless you're driving, you probably want to be outside looking in, not inside looking out.

Speak for yourself. I thought that bodykit, and the Astra GTE digital dash, were hopeless at the time and said so.
I agree with you about the "tries too hard" styling now prevalent on the majority of newly designed cars.

I think you do the transmission a disservice... I don't think its significantly heavier than a PDK, the claims for efficiency are extremely good, plus it has launch control and a greater spread of ratios...

What Im trying to say is that if the 0-62, had a 3 in front of it, then it would have opened up an even bigger market for it, anyhow independent testing might even do that for it!

It's traction-limited. It's a heavy great lump of a front-engined rear-drive car. You could give it 1000 bhp and it would still do the same 0-60. Make it a transaxle car, or 4WD, or mid-engined, or rear engined, or 200 kg lighter, and it would do it quicker.

I'm sure you're right. No point compromising other aspects of tyre performance, and making it more expensive, by fitting it with tyres that are capable of more than 186 mph.

>...and a 186mph top speed. Given the power figure, that vmax looks quite low to me, but then anything over 180mph does seem ample these days.

Speed governor dictated by the speed rating of the OEM tires fitted. 186mph = Y-rated. Jaguar doesn't cert their own tires, correct? That's why Porsche N-spec tires are a bit more, because for high-output 911s they'll cert a tire past 186mph. Though the 911 Turbo and Turbo S are now governed because a tire certified past 200mph isn't a cheap thing.

It's even better looking that the convertible. Fantastic.

Great that Jaguar are correcting their mistake in pitching the price too high.

At last someone is doing what TVR were very successful at - building a car with stunning looks that sounds great and goes like greased weasel poo.

Anyone played with the F type configurator ?
