Which is faster horsepower or torque?
Discussion
So general consensus of opinion is BHP is faster.
But.............in the real world of driving, which is more use on our roads.BHP or Torque? I drive a diesel, but then I like the power delivery mid range ie for overtaking. That is heavily reliant on torque.
I'm not interested in 160mph, nor zero to sixty in 4 seconds, however the ability to overtake in the 50-80 range makes me grin. Is it Torque or BHP doing that ??

The only thing that moves a car is power (work done). Torque is a measure of force expressed as applied to a lever e.g 100lbft is 100lb on a 1 ft lever. If you notice lbft does not have any time in the equation, if it did lbft/sec then we would have power (As expressed by James Watt's 33,000 ft·lbf/min figure)But.............in the real world of driving, which is more use on our roads.BHP or Torque? An engine that has 300lbft at 2-4000rpm is producing 114-228hp between 2-4000rpm.

All things being equal mid range 50-70mph the torquier car will be quicker if you're cruising along in 5th or 6th gear and both cars floor it. So for overtaking on typical day to day driving the torquier car has the edge as its far easier to access its peak power and torque at circa 3-4000rpm. The car with more bhp once up to high revs and if kept at high revs will be 50% faster in all other circumstances and more of a thrill ...You decide whats better but for track use the high bhp with lower torque is better in my opinion and for road driving I'd probably take the torquier car although to be honest 400lbs of torque is still pretty meaty though and doubt any car needs more torque than that in the real world!!
