Ford Racing Puma - a great one for 5k.

Sell it in a year for 5k (maybe 6!)

Realised that after I typed it, good point. I don't mind paying for a service for a bit of history really.

So that's 2 votes for an Integra.

Anyone any opinion on these?
I would say that's a good suggestion (I have a non turbo 944 myself) and I think values are on the up on good examples of 944s currently as bad examples get scrapped. All the old 911 Porsches are now in five figures so the value of the front engine cars will get dragged up too.

If you buy a car such as a 10 year old M BMW of some sorts and it's got full dealer/specialist history and then you do your own service, it will put a lot of people off as a fully stamped book is an attractive selling point.

Agreed that this is a fairly rock solid investment. Probably better cars for the money but this will be fun and probably keep value

E36 M3 or E34 M5 3.6 won't lose anything in terms of value IMO. Obviously running costs can be a different matter

Or what about an E36 Alpina B3 3.2?

Anyone any idea what e36 m3 running costs are like?

Looking at inspection 1 and 2 prices on a few forums, it seems pretty high. In comparison i suspect an Integra or similar is much cheaper.

I did exactly what you are looking to do about 15 months ago. I went with the Integra and don't regret that decision. The insurance is very low for me. Fully comp - I paid £130 last year. The servicing costs were a few hundred quid from a reputable Honda independent. That was for an engine oil, transmission fluid change and the valve clearances checking. I believe that's deemed to be a major service, so the next one will literally be an oil change. Then its tax and fuel.

As a third car, it doesn't cover many miles and it's not an extraordinarily quick car but its the driver involvement that I enjoy more than anything. That enjoyment is amplified when you spend a lot of time sat in more modern cars.

Good call. One of the all time great hot hatches and it won't depreciate a great deal. Would complement the MX5 nicely as a four seater with a boot.

If you want something more traditional then an S-Series TVR might be worth a look. Great noise, decent handling, adequate grunt but modest enough to drive quite hard on the road. They're also significantly cheaper to run than the V8s. Arguably clashes a bit with the MX5 (two seats, open top...) but they have so much sense of occasion.

As others have said, if you want to go a step further then £5k is entry level Westfield money. Okay, kit cars aren't for everyone, but it's a far more visceral experience than something like an M3 if you're after a weekend fun car.

I'd avoid it. If you've not already, sign up to the itr-dc2 forum as there's usually some well serviced, well cared for cars on there.

OP, if you can find £6k I reckon you'll get your money back on this - maybe even make a bit if you are spanner handy and can fix the occasional missfire problem mentioned in the ad?

Looks like a lot of fun to me!

Well I found an e36 M3 I like the look of. Insurance is a massive hike though so not sure about this any more. £500+ to current insurance is just a little bit too much.

Surprising as e46 quotes i did about 6 months ago came back similar to the mx5.

Integra was also similar so may be a more sensible option.

Got looking at bug-eye STI Impreza's - not sure if these keep their value though. Going to look into RB5's too as Dad used to have a turbo 2000 when they came out so I can relive some of my boyhood.
