"I can only keep this offer today"

Why? What happens to the offer tomorrow? Or next week? Is my money no good then? Do you expect me to believe that if I come back in a weeks time with the cash you'd say "Sorry, last weeks offer was for last week, not it's £x more..."
Sometimes a manufacturer campaign finishes and if the order isn't in the system by the cut-off, he really can't offer the deal any more. Until the next campaign comes along but that might be on a different model, or different terms.

I'm a nerdy car geek who likes facts and details. Most car sales people do it for the money.

Its nice to buy from a car geek but as long as they don't tell me lies I can ignore BS, being lied to or told something factual that is untrue would make me walk, but I'd prefer not to advertise the fact I like cars to strangers.

It was a 7 anyway, and I think it was a 750 badge but was actually a rebadged 740 they used.

I miss my E38s frown
I thought it was a 750il? I believe all but one survived.
I'm right (for once) according to this: http://jamesbond.wikia.com/wiki/BMW_750iL#Trivia

Every salesman in Currys/PC world maybe?
Every salesperson in Currys PC World is a bit harsh, my father works in the KnowHow bit of one of their stores, and he's successfully run his own computer fixing business for 8 years, and does actually know what he's talking about.

That said, he dislikes the place for the same reasons the rest of us do.

Partly why I failed miserably as a car salesman....I was passionate about cars, and wanted my customers to buy the car they actually wanted !! Not good when the garage is interested purely in numbers and couldn't give a flying fk about its customers ..
Hated the bullst other "sales professionals" used to come out with.
If you can bear it, the best ones are the ones that can't stop talking - got a great deal on a new SEAT a few years ago, but it did take a loooong time!

You do have to lead them on a bit and make them think you're going to buy on finance, take GAP etc.

In terms of cars, I hate that 'the phones been ringing on this one all morning. There's lots of people coming to see it later and we've had loads of enquiries'

If I'm looking at a car, it's because I'm interested in it already you fool. None of this bull$hit is going to make me more interested in it.

On the flip side, I pride myself on my product and competitor knowledge. I am often referred to as a walking brochure.....

Also the go-to person when it comes to appraising higher end part exchanges to establish desireable cost options etc

I find it equally annoying when customers insist that what they are saying is fact when I know it not to be true. Will gently argue the point when possible but the customer is always right.....

We aren't all ex mobile phone salesmen......! ;-)

I looked at an early BINI Cooper S which made the most horrendous whining noise at idle. Had a quick look and the power steering reservoir was dry as far as down as I could see. It drove OK apart from that and a few other niggles, asked the boss man about it because the power steering pumps are a known weak point on these and it would probably soon be shagged as a result of running dry.

"Oh that's the supercharger, people pay good money to get that noise, marks out a proper hot hatch"

Hmm. Alright then.. I shall get back in my doesn't-whine-like-a-bd "couldn't offer anything over scrap value" E46 and go..

I was a Salesman in a few main dealerships over the years and yes some sales execs do tell bs even though I was probably easier to say I don't know the answer to that etc..

But from doing this job for so long you realise that buyers are liars too.

When looking for my last car i went to test drive the base Evo 8 with 260hp. Salesman only had an MR FQ360 for me to test drive so off we went. After very spirited drive i pulled back into the dealership and asked how different the 260 was from the MR FQ360 knowing full well they are worlds apart and he told me apart from a few bits of trim and some "tweeks" they were exactly the same............I am not that stupid my friend!

4.8 banned practices (schedule 1):

You must not falsely state that a vehicle
will only be available for a very limited
time, or that it will only be available on
particular terms for a very limited time,
in order to elicit an immediate decision
from the consumer (banned practice 7).
For example, a dealer falsely tells a
consumer that the ‘special offer price’
will be increased the next day in order to
pressurise him into making an immediate
decision to buy the vehicle.

When looking at a used Skoda Octavia vRs the salesmen asked me what other cars I had looked at. I replied that I was also considering an Audi A3 Sportsback. "How much more", the salesman asked. "About £4,000", I said. The salesmen then came out with, "Oh, about £1000 per ring then". Actually not a stupid thing to say, just funny in my opinion.

Or swap wheels on the part exchange and hope nobody notices. Or lie that it's not been a write off. Or lie that it's got a full history.

Nah, customers are angels that would never do anything like that are they wink

Porsche dealer in Devon (that narrows it down a bit!)
"I'm looking for a 2+2, I've seen a DB9 and Maserati, and would like to see a 911"
"What's the budget?"
"£45k or so"
"Oh, for that sort of money you could get this new Boxster over here"
"Can I fit child seats in the boot?"

Had a BMW salesperson tell me about the ceramic brakes on a car that had standard brakes. In the same dealership on the same day, the service manager was telling me my M6 had had a turbo waste gate actuator replaced under warranty. On a V10 M6 which has no turbo...
