This went for 6900 today, plus the commission.

Brave pills no doubt required, but a more than passingly pleasing amount of metal.

Wow thats cheap for such a nice looking one.

I'm currently wondering what to spend my 10-12k on to replace my Boxster S. Do I stretch to an SL55 or go for a an SL500 while petrol is still relatively affordable? Replace my 986 with a 987? Decisions, decisions...

Yowzers!

First reaction was "how much??!!", but having looked at the pictures and struggled through the text, it is rather compelling isn't it?

JC - as the resident voice of experience in such matters, how much of a bork contingency do I need in order to run one of these? (And I know... I should have bought yours)
Seen that in the flesh, it is a clean example and apparently v.quick.

My mate had one, ingested both turbos after a VMax.

Running costs on them are in the stratosphere.

Are they not a completely different league in costs compared to most M and RS models?

Is it though?

5 years ago you had the pick of the bunch for £6k.

Pick of the bunch for £6k?! I don't know what ones you've been looking at the past few years but I've never heard anything of the sort, certainly not 5 years ago.

Regardless, these will only ever drop so far, there's not going to be a huge difference in selling price with comparable cars at 150k miles and 200k miles.

It's a 2.5 :-/
These are becoming cheaper and cheaper. I have been offered a 1999 S with 84,000 miles for 2.5K. It needs 400 quid spending on it to tidy it up but this is train station car territory.
Is that an 'S' registration, or a 3.2 S?
1999 S reg 2.5 Manual. Silver with Black Leather, Climate, Electric memory seats and cruise. MOT & Tax Until Nov. Recent clutch, Battery & Service including plugs.Brakes were changed 8k miles ago. P Zero 'N' rated tyres x 4 with 4-5mm remaining. Engine started first time, no smoke and sounded sweet. Shame, as I don't need another car.

Chaps - £2k car to do 60 miles per day. Must have climate, must work, must get >=40mpg on a mostly dual carriageway commute.

What do we think?

Pick might be a slight exageration but many a lunch time was spent browsing the PH classifieds with a colleague back then.

£5k definitely bought you a decent one.

Doesn't appeal in the slightest, tbh. Doesn't have to be remotely sporty, comfort is more important.

Current leaning is a Clio dCi 100, just the "must work" part concerns me slightly. Could always use the X5, but it almost seems a waste using something so big. That said, it is under warranty...

A decent M5 for £5k in 2009? 10 years old at most and £50k new, that goes against anything I've read.

I was fairly certain the bottom of the barrel ones only just started at that in the past 2 or 3 years.

Kid at work has just paid that for a Passat estate 130tdi. Climate, leather, heated seats, tons of room. He's commutes a similar distance and gets 45mpg all week long.

I've driven it and it's a perfectly decent appliance. Unusual choice for a 21 year old but he's into shooting and outdoorsy stuff. Plus, he's seeing a lass, and his family are strict religious types, so the rear load space comes in handy.

Just use the X5. By the time you've forked out for insurance, MoT, servicing, etc, to still be driving around in something that isn't as comfy/luxurious as your X5, while it sits on the drive depreciating, seems pointless? As you say, it's under warranty, so if you stack up big miles and it breaks, they will fix it. OK, petrol/diesel will cost more, but I'd go for the X5 myself.
