Is it not a low volume thing with the same exclusions that things like USDM Corvettes enjoy? I think TVRs also cost about £180 year to tax too.
Yes, they are taxed based on engine size rather than CO2, unlike the ///M cars.

I presume the CLK55 referred to above has a registration date prior to 26 March 2006.

AMGs are taxed on emissions but anything above 225g registered prior to that date (and I believe the 5.5 AMG is well into the 300s) pays the band K rate. Although I reckon most on this thread are more than aware of that wink

It's a 2002 car, so I'm assuming it must be the low volume thing.

I've done a deal at work today, we're taking in a 54 plate Audi A3 Quattro V6 3.2 DSG with 83k on it in vgc, if I want it I can have it for just over £3k! I had a blat around the block in it when I was appraising it, and thought it was very good!

Good idea, or bad idea?
I've got one - epic value, especially compared to an equivalent diesel model!

Steering is bland, and it understeers if you're pushing it (esp at slow speed, e.g. roundabouts). However, non-S-Line suspension and 17" wheels mean the ride is fine, engine is glorious (but it's not as fast as you think with the weight and 4WD), and the DSG is novel. MPG is not too bad (average 26mpg brim-to-brim and I mostly use it for short journeys - motorways are 30mpg, best ever long trip was 36.6mpg). Quattro great for sharp takeoffs from uphill wet junctions (plenty round here).

On another note, anyone going to Car Fest South?!

Chaps, £500 a year for a warranty on an 2006 330i. Value or is there limited bork potential for high value items to justify such expense. £500 in the Oh st fund feels like a fair war chest on a car of that type.......

BMW extended "comprehensive" warranty, yes. £100 excess per claim.

Is it a high spec car? I would think nav and pan sunroof are more likely to give problems than the N52.

Deliberately not. No nav, no I-drive, no roof.

Nav went wrong on my E46 M3 and cost nearly £3k to sort. That car did about £5k on the warranty in its year in my custody. Not sure how much it did when MattOz had it.

Coil packs and fuel pump is the bork risk AIUI.

Alpina road tax... Turns out it's only £126.50 for 6 months. How does that work then?

Pleasantly surprised!

And insurance no more expensive than the little 1er.

Can't wait for Saturday...
What's the fate of the 1'er chap? Stick or twist?

Do like that car.

BMW warranty paid for a fair bit on the CS. The nav unit went tits up again and that was £2k from memory. It also did a brake pressure sensor and a few other hits and pieces. Probably almost £3k over 20 months. Paid £78 a month full comp warranty with no excess. Now clearly, I spent over £1500 on the warranty, but it paid for itself.

Less bork potential than many modern mercs, I guess.

Twist.

Entertaining little car, and a cracking engine, but lacked a certain sophistication in the chassis / ride department.

I'm hoping an Alpina e39 isn't too big a swing in the opposite direction.

£8k in under three years. Ya fker!

And people think Nav is desirable?! £5k buys a lot of Tom-Toms.

How on earth does a sat nav cost £3 & £2k to fix? I hadn't realised an E46 M3/E90 3 series could generate such bills, or how it has become an almost accepted inevitability of a 21st century BMW.

I'd wager that it doesn't really cost that. It's the list price of the part and in reality, not what it costs Mondial to replace. Outside of warranty, I'd have got it fixed or bought another unit for about £250-400. The warranty, from my perspective, was purely worth it for the ability to throw the car in to BMW when/if something went awry.

In much the same way as the "Service advisor" will quote £1,200 for an Inspection 2 without a hint of a smirk. Some people must pay it. I fear within our screwed up society some people will wave those invoices like badges of honour.

In terms of the warranty, one assumes the franchise sees that as open season in terms of billing potential and charge top whack on everything, whereas you or I would, as Matt suggests, find an alternate supplier or get some kind of discount.

BMW are not alone. Porsche are right up there, too, IMO/E

Always difficult to compare different cars at different times of their lives, when they've been subjected to different uses and are at points on their respective bath tub and depreciation curves that are all but impossible to align. Based on my experience the NSX was much cheaper to run than the E46 (IIRC it was cheaper than an Elise, too), which I think is probably the most expensive car I have (will) ever run, during that specific period of its life cycle any way. And that's before you factor in any depreciation (or appreciation during the period since I sold mine. Let's not reflect on the relative value of all three vehicles mentioned since they left my garage as it would be rather too depressing).

Chaps,

Before I hand over the full amount for the CLK, I've done a 'my car check' check on it, shows nothing but the plate changes. My question is, is it worth doing a full HPI check? Is it any more information or any more valid than the cheaper ones?
