But most of those reasons aren't rational and fall squarely within the "just because I want one" category, which is perfectly good enough for me.

Our passions are broad. From V8 German barges, through aging Minis, bastardised old Jags to Renault 4s... Barely a rational justification amongst us. Can you imagine what they make of us at www.x5heads.com?

Which is one thing I love about this thread; that we can all find and make every justification we need to to ourselves to satisfy our various peccadilloes, however insane they may be - and the rest of the group supports those bonkers choices.

I don't wish to criticise anyone choosing a SUV (not in the Thread at least!) and indeed I may end up with a SUV because the OH wants one. My dislike of SUVs has become more about their collective effects.

I just can't subscribe to some arguments about SUVs being more practical/rational than estates. If you need to tow big loads and/or get off sealed roads from time to time, SUVs are better for those specific tasks. I firmly believe only a very small minority of SUV buyers do those things. Otherwise SUVs have higher running costs, often worse ride and handling and most seem to have less interior space.

I guess I feel the practicality card gets overplayed in order to conceal the chief reason, which is that people want them.

I am actively looking for a used X5, mainly because estates are tough to come by in this manor, but also because I want one. We do not off-road at all, but we lug stuff about all the time and the current car just isn't up to the task anymore.

Rationally speaking, there is little to touch it in the price range I'm looking at. An L322 is attractive but I don't believe they are reliable enough.
The only others I've considered and discounted are a Touareg because the first gen look dated, and a Land Cruiser or variant thereof, which are mega mileage and older than the equivalently priced X5.

I also want a feck-off truck, but that's a different kettle of frutti di mare
