I just can't subscribe to some arguments about SUVs being more practical/rational than estates. If you need to tow big loads and/or get off sealed roads from time to time, SUVs are better for those specific tasks. I firmly believe only a very small minority of SUV buyers do those things. Otherwise SUVs have higher running costs, often worse ride and handling and most seem to have less interior space.

I guess I feel the practicality card gets overplayed in order to conceal the chief reason, which is that people want them.
When the time came to change the e46 330xd touring for something else, the missus petitioned heavily for a SUV mainly on the strength of argument that it would be less of a back breaking exercise to insert / remove the kids from their car seats than a coupe or an estate. She's absolutely right (we're both tall) but has also since admitted that she misses the handling and pace of the xd. The Tiguan is not an inspiring drive. Think roly poly golf on stilts with a boot full of cement.

I've lined up a 530d XDrive and an E350 CDI 4Matic as the next family wagon for when the little monsters can clamber in under their own steam but would settle for an all toys Toureg 3.0 TDI so long as we have the space for something a little more lairy on the side. I guess it depends if this is for a one or multiple car fleet.

Surely the only true Thread answer is that one should own both an estate and an SUV?

And a Grand Tourer.

It's done 160k miles as well cleverly disguised in the ad as just 7800 miles per annum!

There is a garage in Hockliffe that has both an 'Xtreme' Porsche Cayenne and an 'Xtreme' Range Rover Sport. They also have another type of over inflated RR Sport, I couldn't see what it was in my state of stupification due to the aforementioned 'Xtreme' styling.
I'm thinking there's a stereotype of owner but I can't quite put my finger on it...

'Xtreme' Cayenne looks a bit like this but has additional lights in the lower grills:

I've towed two tonnes of trailer up a steep muddy slope with no dramas. Can't think of a saloon car that could've done it. If I needed to drive over boulders, it wouldn't be the right tool for the job, but for everything else it's just fine. So actually 100% real-world off-road ability.
Surely a 4WD saloon or estate world have done it just as well then (probably better as it wouldn't have comedy 325 tyres)?

I'm a big fan of pointless cars (X6 etc obviously excepted), but I wouldn't try to justify them objectively. Because you can't.

Had I been in a 4WD saloon/estate I'd be gluing the sump back together now. And they don't all have comedy tyres - 255 and 285 on mine.

It does some things better than an estate would. Fact. Not sure how that can be so hard to understand.

You can design a justification for anything, but an X5 is a compromised 5 Series 99℅ of the time for 99% of the people driving them. Nobody cares because "SUV".

Right. But if it can't do what you need it to for the other 1% of the time then it's even worse. I don't know and don't care why other people have SUVs, I'm only commenting on my own case, which is that it's a better option than a 5er estate.

A bit late, but can you not either lock it with the key, or lock it with the interior door locks; and not arm the alarm? My Integra had a similar problem, I did a quick diagnostics check and it came up with the boot sensor causing the issue. I couldn't remedy it easily though, so locked the car as suggested rather than with the remote central locking for the following five years..

Had a nice little drive at dawn today.

One of the little things I like about the car is looking in the wing mirrors and seeing the rear haunches and the edge of the rear wing, which reminds me a little of a deer antler at the right angle (not quite captured in this photo).



fking love this car. cloud9 I've done nearly 3000 miles in 4-5 months, mostly just on early morning weekend blats. I just want to drive it all the time.

Anyone else surprised by how cheap Evoras are?



Yours for a fiver under 30k, and it's not even the cheapest! Seems a lot of special car for the money.
