Chaps,

Mercedes esp/tc. W.T.F.

Due to some roadworks my commute is now 20mins of deserted, single track, well sighted, damp, leaf covered and surprisingly smooth country lanes.
Not really explored the limits of rear grip in the car so decided to have a play on a particularly wet, leaf covered corner. ESP off. Gave it a boot full and nothing but a flashing triangle on the dash. hmm

Next corner, same again. Well sighted, deserted. Foot down WOoooooOOAh! huge sideways angle. Off throttle and back into shape. Straight line and foot down, flashing triangle again.

Whats the deal with it? Is it on or off?

I know there are Mercs that never completely relinquish the electronic net. I'd suspect the CLK of yours falls under that.

iirc with Mercedes esp then when you turn it off it is never fully off if you see what I mean. As for the slightly erratic nature that yours displayed I can only assume it is perhaps not the most quick witted of setups on this era of Mercedes.

Can someone buy this and do the least possible to get it driving well and past an MOT? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1973-JAGUAR-XJ12-L-5-3-P...

As already said, turning it off does fully turn it off.

But, if you enter a hidden menu you can put it into 'test' mode which knocks out the lot, inc ABS.

It's still running fine, but needs a new radiator (the coolant leak has got gradually worse) and a couple of rear shocks (one has a leak). And while it's in I'm going to give it a transmission service (which is rogeringly expensive, not least because it takes 9 litres of ATF at circa £30 a litre!)

It's a great old bus and Mrs G really likes it, so it makes sense to spend some money on keeping it tip top. Rockingly easy to drive and perfect for our needs, so it's looking like a keeper. thumbup

Have you driv' one?

The gearbox is horrible, even once mated to a v8.

I can see the appeal of an m50 donkied one
I agree. Or get the one with the S38B38. It's manual and great. hehe

Belongs to user GarageQueen.
Ta.

No mention of a chain change.
It's the car that 4* had up for sale around the same time as yours Grubes. I believe the final advertised price was £21.5k. Shame to see it damaged and being moved on.

For such a "car for life", the ownership period was short. Wonder why?

It does need discs and pads: maybe he's just received the quote? hehe

If only it were always so simple as that.

it's sad to see something that was once so wonderful reduced to a pile of rust.

Looking at that engine bay, and the big chunks of rust falling off the back of the car (I assume that's what it is under the back picture of the car), it just screams money-pit!

But you would love to restore it to its former glory, wouldn't you...
