Obviously a hot hatch isn't about the numbers but the Panda and Twingo seem a bit luke warm.
Sorry, I come from a time when the mk2 Golf GTI was thought of as a proper hot hatch, the idea of a hot hatch requiring 300bhp to wear such a title I find a little abhorrent if I'm honest
Totally appreciate where you're coming from re. the mk2. I wasn't for a moment suggesting a Golf R to be the benchmark of hot hatches. If anything, I'd say the current breed of R, m135 etc. are a new genre akin to the Impreza and Evo of a generation ago. Was purely pointing out the performance difference between the Twingo/100HP and a Clio 182. 50/80bhp is a fair bit in a little car.

Crikey! I've just had my first go in a Tesla and I am stunned by its ability, what a belting package!

'tis quite nippy but it also handles well and rides beautifully. The strangest bit for me is not the lack of noise (in fact it sort of makes its own type of noise that I like - its like a "rushing" noise), but its the regenerative braking effect as soon as you lift off the throttle. It'd take a bit of getting used to but my word it covers ground very quickly and competantly indeed.
Which one did you drive? I drove the 470bhp one a few weeks ago and was also pleasantly surprised. It tails off a bit as you go faster, but from 5 mph the thing is stunningly quick!
I'll double check tomorrow but I think its just the regular P85. Either way, I like!

Gents, whilst the topic is briefly on hot hatches, I could do with some useful suggestions that could accomplish the following

Carry a mountain bike in the back
Manage a 50 mile commute without requiring weekly attention
Be a hoot to drive on the numerous back roads that seem unique to the north of Scotland
Be less than £4k to buy.

Want to keep it for at least a couple of years, so far I've come up with the Panada 100hp, Twingo 133 and a Clio 182. What have I missed??
I would strongly consider one of the above that you've mentioned or if not;

1. The softer 'hot-hatch' ie. grown up?! 5dr, well equipped, roomy, comfy and a stonking chassis just not all that quick but I really like 'em

===========================

2. Bomproof reliability, fantastic (if buzzy) engine and great fun (prefer the original to the later heavier cars personally) but not all have aircon

That, and a healthy LS400 would cover pretty much all the bases. All for around 4 grand.

Quite possibly but then at least 50% of the time driving either of those, I'd be regretting not spending the full amount on an E90 330. /boring

As a 'cheap' pairing I'd go for a 182 FF and a Disco I think.

Great wheel-arch-tyre profile ratio there.

And the wheels are the correct shade of polish or whatever its known as.

Its a good pic too, car looks great there, perhaps less so outside Sainsbury's.
