Gosh, that SL600 sounds rather fruity, non? Significantly more so than Pater's old SL500, which both moved and sounded like it had been neutered.

Hmmm scratchchin

quiet weekend for the thread?!

I was out in Essex on Friday night and saw one of these:

Looked and sounded good, and even prompted Mrs rejn to ask if I ever had a capri (not yet!)

But while finding a pic of that, I came across this:

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C514427

A bespoke 3.6 motor - I've no idea how much stress the engine could take before falling apart, but sounds like a great idea - and if he's taken as much effort over the engineering as he has the badge of the back of the car, it looks like it could be good!

I've seen ( and tried ) the Ultimax Cologne conversions on 4is and XR4x4 but not on a Capri before

I had a Turbo Technics Sierra XR4x4 22 years ago. It had a single turbo on one side. Originally it was 250bhp but I had the heads reworked and a different cam and it made 287bhp on a rolling road. It went like stink but didn't stop. The bottom ends are tough enough. Mine also used the mechanical K-jetronic and a dizzy.

Turbo Technics themselves ran a reworked version of the 2.9 with around 400bhp as a track day weapon - this was ecu. So the engine is tough enough.

Edited to add:

Mine was based on the 2.8 engine. For those that don't know the major difference between this and the 2.9 is the head. On the 2.8 it had a siamesed head. The 2.9 had 6 ports. Both are good old fashioned single cam and pushrods.

When Cosworth developed the 24v version they went to town and added twin cam over head 4v per cylinder. The cosworth version still retains the original single Cam which is just used to drive the oil pump.

I'll stop rambling now...

Whilst we are reminiscing, far too many moons ago I used to work opposite Swaymar Engineering who were well known for building and modifying the Ford V6 (both Essex and Cologne). Their core product was their own design non-siamesed cylinder heads. cool

Whilst I never got to drive any of their product, I did see some very interesting metal come and go. My claim to fame is that I had them machine my Escort Mk2 engine block, transported to and from work in place of the passenger seat in my brother's Mini. hehe

You could also get the Arizona heads for the 2.8 from US cars with 3-ports

Yes, mine does have the lip. Time to get it all shiny.

1st part of plan, on Friday I get my first sensible car: a diesel.
2nd part of plan, smarten it up and sell M3 (maybe give it a run at Bedford first...)
3rd part of plan, something daft.
1st part complete
2nd part complete

I am now the proud (?) owner of the ubiquitous VAG 1.9tdi. Mine has the merest tinge of the Spanish about it and without going all 'torque waves' and 'in-gear acceleration' not to mention 'real-world driving' it's not actually that bad at all. Six forward gears and 150 whatevers and it is decently brisk, completely invisible and with FSH and 70k on the clock (owned by the Fil for the last 9 years) it cost all of not a lot and a good pub lunch.

Oh, and the M3 is gone.

How did you find the sale process? Did you have to do much/any work on the car prior to sale?

I think I'll be selling my C43 in the spring.

It was to a family member so really easy. No prep.
Otherwise it would have been either get it fully smartened up or sell as is/was and be brutally honest with the cosmetic issues in the ad.
As it was the buyer has known the car since I purchased it and had had his eye on it.

Excellent - I used to race one of them (but as you highlight, for the non-bearded folk, it's easier to explain it just as an R400). I sold it for £14k a few years ago and regretted it ever since

There's a name I'd forgotten about! I had the catalogue, but as a cash strapped 21 year old, never the funding to do much about it.

Talking of nostalgia, I've had my Capri 2.8i for 20 years in May. For somebody who struggles to keep a car beyond 20 weeks, I can't believe I've just typed that.

To the purists, it lacks desirability, mechanical sophistication, class. A basic, modern 1.4 hatch will run rings around it. But say what you like: it's still a drivers car. Still sounds well. Still moves around rather than just goes around. Still entertains, 20 years on smile
