Talking of nostalgia, I've had my Capri 2.8i for 20 years in May. For somebody who struggles to keep a car beyond 20 weeks, I can't believe I've just typed that.
To the purists, it lacks desirability, mechanical sophistication, class. A basic, modern 1.4 hatch will run rings around it. But say what you like: it's still a drivers car. Still sounds well. Still moves around rather than just goes around. Still entertains, 20 years on

My first car was a Capri. My older brother had a mk2 2.0s then a mk 2 3.0s which was hilarious. Seemed to have such a huge amount of torque back then. Great noise too.

The CLK, its a great car. comfortable, genuinely quick, suprisingly good MPG. But it blends into the background. I dont really know how to describe it. Fantastic engine but its just not a 'special' car. Kinda halfway. Nice as nice a place to be as the 530 and not as fun as the 182.
That description applies equally to the S4.I can't see the point in jumping from one "fades into background car with big engine" into another if that's not what floats your boat.

From memory, isn't the car you really want an E39 M5? Why don't you go with that, as its seems you buy almost anything else rather than the one you lust after (I recognize the symptoms as I have done exactly the same in the past)I jumped on one yesterday, and whilst I know it needs some work and the associated spend, I want to try one before they all disappear or the prices rise too much

An S4 has a nicer cabin than a CLK, similar economy, similar performance and also won't be as fun as a 182.
Better compromise to be had from a manual E46 M3 perhaps?I know an S4 isn't a particularly special car either but I've got my eye on one that's nogoro blue with an ivory interior. Bit different to the silver/black combo I've got currently!

Probably. But for my £6k budget they are all SMG which frankly scares me.

Grubby, but a late one, so the revised engine, claimed 1 owner from new and FSH, plus the lovely full leather option, even though it's a dull as fk colour combination, and it's the most local all in its favour.
I knew that I'd seen the picture before, and it piqued my interest when you posted, but I was put off by the perceived condition combined with the price. However, after idly browsing autotrader on Sunday morning and seeing the price was reduced, I decided to go and take a look after ringing the chap.Grubby, but a late one, so the revised engine, claimed 1 owner from new and FSH, plus the lovely full leather option, even though it's a dull as fk colour combination, and it's the most local all in its favour.

It is indeed a one owner car, and whilst it does have FSH, its hardly been used in the last few years and so it now needs some fairly major tlc. The wheels are pretty corroded, in fact one of the rears is as bad as I have ever seen, and the interior, albeit being the heritage upgrade, with leather dash console etc has had seven bells kicked out of it by two kids over the last 13 years.
Still, it was honest, straight, looked OK otherwise, so I did the exact opposite of what any sane person would do, and purchased. I've dithered around buying an E39 M5 for over 4 years, so with the advent of a friend buying his dream 911 last week, the conversation on the way to collect gathered my thoughts regarding a purchase.
So, I have a new car that my wife doesn't know about yet, I had too many cars before I purchased this one, its bound to cost me the proverbial to get it up to scratch, but you only live once right? right? (anyone interested in a manual interlagos blue M3 CS?)

I'll go through the motions of trying to explain why it's a bad idea before you go ahead and do it anyway:I know an S4 isn't a particularly special car either but I've got my eye on one that's nogoro blue with an ivory interior. Bit different to the silver/black combo I've got currently!
You've just bought a CLK that stands you far more money than it's worth. You're bored of it because it's not that exciting (we did say...). If you spend £6k on an S4, you'll be buying towards the bottom of the market and the first thing you'll need to do is spend £1k+ on it. Add to that the ability they have to throw the occassional big bill, and it's a reasonable undertaking. To get any enjoyment out of it you need to make sure it has fresh suspension, decent tyres and an RS4 rear ARB - more money. And after all that, it still won't be all that exciting.
If you really want out of the CLK at a price that won't make your eyes water then you'll be sitting on it for a while, so get it advertised (properly) now, and when the cash comes in get a winter snotter for peanuts while you swell the coffers of your M5 fund, if that's the car you really want. Although if you're not loving the CLK then I suspect it probably isn't.
TL;DR : buy this:
