Oh that is lovely looking, but it seems people just make up a number and then double it or treble it, what they are asking and what they'll get are two entirely different things I suppose. Good luck to them.
Bonkers. That's a £25k car, tops.

I can imagine this being how my lottery win garage will look....

  • Disclaimer: Although there is no SWB Land Rover in shot.
Or dog.
yes

Are we into the realms of a specific breed for that sumptuous garage, though?

Our Rosie (a Staffie) would look out of place, bless her.

A Parson's Terrier, maybe!
Great photo and good question!

Bernese mountain dog for me.

For that price I'd want:

1. The correct headlamp rings with wiper stops
2. A full toolkit with original tools
3. 20 minutes in a room with Jennifer Lawrence (4 if I'm wearing slip-ons)

When do deliveries start? I expect I'll be seeing one effing millions in this neck of the woods very soon.

I think we need to accept that the manual is dead. 21st C. buyers of high end cars hail mostly from the middle and far east these days, where they're neither interested nor capable of performing the ridiculously complicated feat of depressing a pedal and stirring a lever at the same time; meanwhile trying to hold onto the steering wheel for dear life.

Now that's out the way, we can focus on enjoying the toys that we're given to play with and accept that along with the crank handle, the manual gearbox is part of our history. Because, having pedaled the new Golf R for a weekend, I have to admit that the DSG 'box is a very competent thing indeed. And for a do-it-all car, I'd certainly think very hard about leaving that box unticked on the order form. As it happens, out here, the Golf GTI and R are only available with the DSG. So if I can leverage any more off the entry fee, I might very well be joining the automatic club!

Obviously I will be dead before anyone prises a manual gearbox'd car from my grasp, but for a general hack...

Mine's a Silver GT-S sans aero pack please lick

Whereas, I must admit, I am rather keen to see what the future brings us. I think the key is to have an arsenal; a manual sports car from yesteryear, a bike to provide proper performance and something current.

It's strange what you get used to, but the inability to have my iPhone streaming Brian Johnson back at me within seconds of getting into the car, or to punch coordinates into a sat nav that doesn't make you want to kill people, is much missed. And as for the gearbox, well the latest double-clutch 'boxes have an uncanny knack of knowing exactly what gear you need to be in, but - and this is the spooky bit - what gear you're about to need. truth be told, I'm more inclined to let them just do their thang and I'll do the wheel twirling.

Moderns have their place, but not unless we can indulge in our yesteryear nostalgia.

As much as I love a manual gearbox, and on a toy like an Exige, Caterham etc I still think it's essential, but what GP says is absolutely true. The manual gearbox in the mainstream is dead.I predict that within 10 years there won't be a manual gearbox on sale, across all the ranges. Dual clutch 'boxes and autos can be programmed to make the car more economical and pass emissions tests easier, so they will come down in cost soon enough. In fact I doubt it'll even be 10 years.

The other point is that the modern gearboxes are fantastic things to use. I've got this for a couple of weeks:

(excuse the overly arty shot)

The 8spd ZF in this thing is absolutely brilliant, I would be absolutely happy using it all day every day. Snappy upshifts, lovely downshifts and a proper auto when it's doing the gears itself. If we accept that the manual is dead and move on, we can get on with accepting that these new 'boxes are fantastic to use.

(But I'd still like a 997 GT3 please)
