My Dad had one of the first XR2s. Bought new. NOH 247X. In Silver and a hilarious little car. Felt properly perky back in the day!tdm34 said:

I'd assume the first is a scam. Too cheap and no phone number.http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/b...

Looks fab- I saw one a few months ago early morning hooning around Canary Wharf and it looked great (but tiny!).That back number plate would annoy me, though - full size width please!

My brother has a grey F reg tucked up in his garage which I've not seen for a few years. It is Tiny. What's also surprising is how small the back lights are. They are literally smaller than your phone. I was following him the last time I saw it out of the garage. The brake lights are almost missable when they illuminate - yes illuminate.I never realised how strangled the cvh engine was by its hydraulic cam thingies until I had a ride in the RS1600i which had solid cam blahs. One of my biggest complaints about the cvh engined cars was their reluctance to rev. Once you've driven an RS1600i you realise the potential is there. If I were shopping for something period with the cvh then I know which car I'd want. For those that don't know the difference between this and the XR brigade - I'm no expert - I'm informed the majority of the front suspension is different. It has bars and braces in completely different locations. It also had a dual coil ignition with an early wasted spark setup.
My take on it...:
E28 - it's hard to tell because there are so few of them and the quality varies massively. I don't think there's really been that much movement over the last three years - certainly nothing like the continued stratospheric rise of the e30 M3s. One or two high profile cars sold for (or have been advertised for) silly money, but most remain in the £15-25k bracket.
E34 - I'd agree
E39 - it seems to me that there are still higher-end-of-the-market cars available now that were for sale back in July when I was looking. So the prices might be rising, but I'd query how many are actually selling.
E60 - the scare stories will only serve to drive prices down further. The E61 has sufficient niche appeal (smaller numbers and the only RHD estate M5 ever, etc) to hold its own.

Can only think of a couple of E28s that've sold in the last 12-18 months, and they were at opposite ends of the price spectrum. I think they're still at a point where they're good value, but it'll be interesting to see where they end up. What I have heard over the same period is that, of the few that remain, there are quite a few basket cases out there that have been tucked away for a future restoration. Given more and more parts for these are becoming NLA, I wonder whether that's as good a plan as it might seem.
Some, yeah. I've delayed anyone viewing it while I replace the heater control panel surround (had screw holes in it, assume from a phone kit or 80s stereo install) which has become a slightly bigger job than anticipated, and I haven't had time to finish. Unless it sells by the end of the month (it won't) it'll be going into the garage for the winter, to emerge once the sun returns.

Biggest bugbear with RS1600i was lack of rear ARB, lift off over steer all over the place, had a caspian blue one, best thing about it was the shark grey velour Recaros! Not a great car in the scheme of things sadly..
RS1600i seats were made by Scheel rather than RecaroRARB was an option at build or from RS Motorsport dealer

That's an interesting point and could be one that ultimately backfires. I wonder if I am inadvertently heading down that path with my E34 too.ATM said:

I actually wanted an Escort RS1600i or RS Turbo, but my meagre finances (to say nothing of the unwillingness of insurers to take me on at cost effective rates) meant I stuck with the Fiesta.Blueprint said:

I'd suggest that if you need any M5 specific parts (particularly trim) you get them ordered now!As an E28 example, the battery box cover and tool kit panel for the boot are now NLA, and bloody impossible to get hold of second hand. Luckily I bought a new battery cover just before it went NLA. In fact, I may have bought the last one...
