I've always had a thing for those too. Would love one as a station snotter, but somehow counterintuitively it would need to be an unmolested one and be bought for peanuts (under £1500). They still seem to command reasonable money and are pretty rare now.

Actually I'm probably a bit older than you, the car I really wanted when I was 17 was the generation before, and wasn't supercharged - the Polo GT "Coupe".

Had to make do with a 1.3l Mk2 Golf C in Gambia red which couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, 4 speed box, yet somehow the love affair with VW has never ended.

I'm willing to bet we're actually pretty similar in age going off that post J hehe I might have lusted over a polo g40 but my realistic target was indeed a so-called gt coupe! There was only one in my small northern city and my weekly Thursday scouring of AT just didn't turn any up within reasonable distance-getting desperate I resorted to buying north east, north west and scottish versions-how dire were things back in the mid 90's?!

In the end we managed to turn up a rough '85 nova sr but that's another story....

Engine and rust stories on anything pre-993 are pretty fking sobering. And strangely forgotten by the majority when discussing 996s!

Do 996s suffer with rust?

Don't seem to, minor corrosion spots seem to occur under door latch plates and sill kick plates plus the usual wheel arch lips from being peppered with stone chips-but these are minor cosmetic issues that can be blown over at minimal cost & won't necessarily effect every car.

Bolts and brackets underneath are another pain, exhaust fasteners especially but it's nothing that's going to keep you awake at night.

Conversely, the 996 GT3 is the one to worry about as it only ever had very rudimentary rust proofing and the underneath of them can look very scabby.

I didn't mean to suggest that, just that running costs for the aircooled stuff can easily match the 996/997 and their engine risks. Two or three years ago, nobody was paying £20k for a IB car (unless maybe it was concours) but the engine still would have cost five figures to rebuild.

I guess an important difference is that the aircooled stuff tends to degrade over time so that you get some warning of a big bill, in contrast to sudden grenading of the watercooled engines.

Someone on PH had their '6 gt3 stripped, cleaned, proofed and painted as the underneath was in a bad shape due to minimal corrosion protection.

Whereas you had yours done because one of the exhaust rubbers had a splash of mud on it.

Others just drove them for 60,000 miles all year round without any apparent ill effects. winkdrivingbiggrin

Not really, no. I drove a friends supercharged one. 320bhp. Was totez meh.

Nothing can be done to make that engine sexy.

C4 is lazy fat oaf's pork du jour. Add a tip box and you could be a Santa Monica orthodontist.

Man up and get a 928. You know it makes sense. All that's good about transaxle Porsche with a proper engine. Just make sure it's a manual.

Interesting, given who pressed the 986 & 996 panels for Porsche.

There were no flies on that Catherine Tramell. She didn't drive no 928.

There's a joke in there somewhere.
