They're considerably improved for the manual versions, if you can ever find one.

The W8 auto is pretty whelming, right noise, but turns far too much fuel into noise than forward motion compared with a contemporary 530i, let alone a V8 Five.

I like the lairy wood in that, livens up the usual VW coal pit interior.

Strange isn't it - a completely nuts car to own, but 98% of the UK public would just think you'd bought a boring ordinary old VW.

I can't help but getting excited about it - I thought a 4WD Passat of that vintage was the bargain barge way forward as boring safe family transport for my family with 3 kids - but with a diesel or 1.8T engine dragging it along.

Now a 4motion Passat Estate would be even more boringly useful.

Were 20k for a good one last time I looked, seems good value with the competition wheels, EDC and manual, struggling to find a good Z4m so could always get one of these as the sensible car and let the wife get a 2 seater for me to steal.

They look interesting to petrolheads at first glance but they are crap. My dad had the 2.8 V6 4Motion and it was just dull and not that quick. If you must have a millionaire's VW buy a V10 or W12 Phaeton, which is a proper car.

They're not £3k though are they?

We need another car for load lugging and general about-town duties, say 10,000 miles per year, tops.

I test drove a 2008 Range Rover, a 2008 BMW X5 and a 2008 BMW 535iXT.

The Range Rover was nice but actually totally unnecessary for us. It came as a bit of a blow but it just somehow didn't feel quite right - we live in suburbia.
The X5 was ok but again, I didn't really want it and for some reason I prefer the older ones to the newer ones.
The Wagon was fantastic but it felt limp on kick-down. Turns out it had a turbo leak and has been withdrawn from sale which is a shame as that is the car I felt most at home in. It had a lot of toys, a pleasant interior and a lot of space. Although leggy, it had an immaculate service history. It may just about be the ugliest 5 series ever but it still doesn't put me off.

Any way, that has now shot to the top of the list but it is hard to come by in the spec I would like. The only alternative I can think of is a Legacy but they don't seem to come with the 3.0 over here (US), plus they are way more money than in the UK which is tough to swallow.
Any one have any other suggestions you can suggest that we may not have considered, or have we arrived at the answer already?

Less than 6-7 yrs old, spacious, loads of toys, wagon or SUV, 4x4, no bone-jarring suspension but not a fluffy pillow either, reasonably reliable, sub-$20k.

I have looked at the Americana but its all a bit naff for our budget, and I just prefer the European/Japanese stuff. I only go giggly at the classic V8s and trucks which is not what we need in family car however much I try to convince myself.

For as long as I can remember Keighley has had a rep for being the home of some rate dodgy car dealers.

Indeed.

Bit of a letdown that they're all just officially-sanctioned versions of the same cosmetic chav-up thing everyone else has been flogging for the past decade.
