RE: Audi S4: PH Fleet
Discussion
Great write up Chris, thank you for sharing.
My wife's late 2010 manual transmission that I purchased for her back in August at 33,000 miles....
de badged from the factory for extra stealth.. Not had the same oil usage as yourself, about 1 litre over the past 8,000 miles. I did invest in a dipstick however and interestingly has needed topping up even though the computer still say's 3/4 full. Also the air Filter was filthy and wasn't due for replacement until 57,000 miles, so changed this immediately.
Quick question, did the remap cure the slight vibration these seem to suffer from at idle?

I have that slightly lumpy vibration at idle.
I have been using a 63 plate at present. Love the thing and its noise, especially when in sport mode. For me 90% of the time it really is an ideal real world car for all situations.
Would very much like to try out one that has been mapped.

Faster than a B7 RS4? Really??
I ask only because I baited one on a roundabout last week and he set off at a pace which I've not seen many cars achieve - I knew they were quick but this was something entirely different - it wasn't acceleration as much as 'instant horizon nutting'.
The last car I saw 'gather forward momentum' like that was a Ferrari FF - estate cars, you know you love em

I ran a 2009 Revo S4 until 4 months ago which I had for 2 years. I initially went to buy a B7 RS4 and the Revo B8 S4 is faster, although I have to admit, the RS4 did handle slightly better.I ask only because I baited one on a roundabout last week and he set off at a pace which I've not seen many cars achieve - I knew they were quick but this was something entirely different - it wasn't acceleration as much as 'instant horizon nutting'.

The standard car felt ordinary in performance terms but with the re-map it put into a completely different league. Their not the sharpest handling cars out there, although that can be rectified with a large wallet, but as an all rounder - for normal road use their hard to beat.
My car was driven gently most of the time and serviced within an inch of its life but the guy who bought it said it developed and engine fault at 40k due to scored bores and needed a engine replacement at the cost of £16k at Audi!
I have replaced it with a BMW M135i as I fancied a complete change and rear wheel drive fun . Its ugly but good fun, although it wouldn't see which way the Audi went on a wet road...

A great car I looked at these when I got my S6 Avant just needed more space and looked at an S6 and loved the effortless nature of the 5lt V10! IMO both are great unsung heros of the Audi sleeper range. If Chris ever needs more space for bigger dogs or more camera equipment perhaps an the S6 Avant (C6) will meet a need?
I think Mr Harris is experiencing the real world "S Audi" ownership conundrum. All of us that buy them (I've had V6 S4, V8 S4 and S6 V10 (current)) actually would prefer something more "exciting" - say an M3 or M5, even something left field like a fast Merc or maybe a Skyline say, but we consider all year and all round performance plus practicality and sober looks, we ignore the usually cr4p ride and off we go.12 months in, where we are usually bored with a car, we sit down to consider a replacement. Option 1 is - buy the newer version, or bigger/smaller model (S3/S4/S6) depending on family considerations. Options 2 is - performance 4x4 (immediately lose Q-car element).
Dependable, surprising and ultimately fun cars.
Chris, have you considered going to a stage 2 tune. I was speaking with MRC a couple of weeks ago and they said on a standard S4 they change the supercharger pulley, air filter and remap for £1,500. This does not require you to change the exhaust or downpipes and on an S tonic car like yours they see 490 bhp. As you have changed the exhaust you would probably see over 500 bhp. I was quite amazed by this as the jump from from standard to nearly 500 bhp for £1,500 sounds like good value to me. They have not had any reliability issues either.

Humm, 500Hp... think I would take that with a large pinch of salt!
Nope, absolutely real and widely verified. MRC are not known for peddling BS.I wonder just how long it can produce this power before intake temps get silly?
This is directly from their website:- Stage 2 Hardware and Remap Upgrade: MRC Filter, MRC Pulley, MRC Hi Grip Belt, Silicon Intake Pipe, Modified Airbox, fitting, Dyno Time and MRC Stage 2 Remap. £1591.00
I had a B5 RS4 that MRC tuned and looked after and I have to agree with Dr G they are well known to be one of the best Audi tuners about. They take time to develop their packages and put a lot of emphasis on reliability.
It seems the B8 S4s are quite popular in the US and they are probably a bit ahead of the game when it come to tuning them. What is clear is that it is a seriously under rated car with a lot of potential. Most NA Audis fall short of their claimed BHP figures (B7 RS4, RS5 etc) but the B8 S4s seemed to achieve more power than Audi claim as standard so who knows what their true potential is yet. I predict they will have the same sort of following in the tuning world as the B5 S4 in years to come.

not wishing to get into a st-fight, but this is done with no upgrade to the intercooler, or fuel delivery system, etc?

I am looking at this package this year. However I will separate the intercooler circuit from the main coolant system first (shared on these vehicles), with its own electric pump and header tank. As you rightly say intake temps must be on the high side.I wonder just how long it can produce this power before intake temps get silly?

it already has it's own electric pump? (yes, it does share the main coolant header tank, but that's no bad thing as it adds pressurisation to the IC cct).I have the Audi self study guide for this engine that has detailed info and diagrams on the charger and cooling if anyone's interested.
The engine as standard is severely throttled it terms of output as it bleeds more boost with rising charger output to give the marketing department, engineers and emissions people what they each require.
