RE: Audi S4: PH Fleet

Indeed.
Whilst no doubt a fast car, certainly not faster than an M5 (from experience, albeit from the passenger seat of a B8 RS4 which from Chris' own video seemed to have the upper hand over the tuned S4) nor a C63 AMG 507 - unless of course you don't allow it to rev over 4500 rpm and therefore let it into it's power band!!!
I will be first to admit, on most things car related, I would generally tend to agree with Monkey but seemingly not on this occasion - certainly at this time of year and accelerating from rest, the Audi would likely have the advantage I suppose but that would quickly be made up and surpassed by either of the above.
All this makes one mindful of a certain diesel a few years back that was touted as being faster than absolutely every other car on the road (sic).

I ran an S4 for a while and against all expectation it got under my skin too. Some cars just do.
Maybe because I didn't think it was that special to start with and trashed it everywhere, in all conditions, I got to enjoy it more of the time.
I will definitely have another soon and perhaps I'll get around to debadging it and painting the door mirrors the same colour as the body this time. The perfect sleeper.

As per my earlier post, I ran a Revo S4 for 2 years and whilst it was a quick car, it certainly isn't as quick as the M5 or C63 once up to speed. I had a play with a C63 between 60 - 110mph and the C63 comfortably pulled ahead.Indeed.

I guess Chris means its faster more of the time in the British weather due to the traction advantage, which is probably true, but a faster car - definitely not. Lets be honest, you cant realistically explore the limits of any of these cars on the road without going to jail.
Its amazing the performance you can buy nowadays for relatively little money. You would have to buy a super-car 20 years ago to get this kind of performance. When I started driving 24 years ago, a Golf GTI 16V was considered a fast car with 140 bhp... An average diesel hatch has that now! What will we be driving in 20 years time?

I think the point here is that in normal circumstances, on public roads, unless your going to drive like a suicidal maniac, the S4 is a quicker car.if you compare it with a C63, in anything other than a straight line, you cannot use the power advantage, and even if you could, it does not over-power the S4 untill illegal speeds are reached.
I would also argue that it's a dam site harder work to drive at this kind of pace than the S4 is.
I have still yet to drive a road car that can take off from a standing start as fast without having to resort to some drivetrain killing launch control or the like, I can't think of another everyday road car that can do 0-30 that fast with so little effort.

Your absolutely right, the S4 had lots of low down torque which gives lots of usable power in everyday road use. The result is instant power at low revs giving huge flexibility. The only problem with some of the N/A engines is you have to rev the nuts of them to access the performance which is why I didn't but a B7 RS4 - good fun when your in the mood but not ideal for normal day to day driving... if you compare it with a C63, in anything other than a straight line, you cannot use the power advantage, and even if you could, it does not over-power the S4 untill illegal speeds are reached.

OK, it's slower, higher tax band, bodge 4wd, and looks cheap and nasty.http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/v...

add to that it's just depreciated £10K in under 12 months, you have the answer.

Oh the Imagine.... I know this is rich coming from someone who owns a Ford Sierra. But HOW much for a second hand

Chris, have you considered going to a stage 2 tune. I was speaking with MRC a couple of weeks ago and they said on a standard S4 they change the supercharger pulley, air filter and remap for £1,500. This does not require you to change the exhaust or downpipes and on an S tonic car like yours they see 490 bhp. As you have changed the exhaust you would probably see over 500 bhp. I was quite amazed by this as the jump from from standard to nearly 500 bhp for £1,500 sounds like good value to me. They have not had any reliability issues either.
This seems incredible, I'd the claims are true it must be one of the cheapest ways to get into a 500bhp daily? Surely given the debate here and the free advertising it would give them they can do the upgrade to Harris's car for free and he can rolling road it!?Zad said:

Vectra Insignia?! Given dealer discounts, that's probably pretty much what they drove it off the forecourt at.

Both interesting alternatives!

If only they did a Monaco, vrx8 estate...

I said you asked and I don't claim it to be the perfect car but, it is a viable alternative and £23k for effectively a new car that does 0-62 5.6 seconds is PH worthy! Audi's and BMWs in this bracket are all around 5 years + old and with 50k miles on the clock. At least it's British built and different. Rather good looking in my eyes and I'm not sure the cavalier, vectors comparison is fair. It's abit like saying all skodas are still crap!
If only they did a Monaco, vrx8 estate...
my last S4 I PX'ed 5 months ago was a 2010 car with 40K on it, only got £17K for it (it was on classifieds for a few weeks with zero interest). If only they did a Monaco, vrx8 estate...
so that's a 3 year old car, with reasonable mileage, another years Audi warranty, for £6K less?
still look like the VX is a bargain?

Unless yours was very poverty spec or needed any work to bring it up to showroom condition I recon that's very cheap. How much more were you tring to sell it for privately?so that's a 3 year old car, with reasonable mileage, another years Audi warranty, for £6K less?

Ouch that's a nasty PX value, what did they put it on the forecourt for ? I'm guessing £21,995...so that's a 3 year old car, with reasonable mileage, another years Audi warranty, for £6K less?
