I enjoy a good few pints or more just like the next bloke when the situation is appropriate. When out for lunch weekdays or weekends I'll not touch it preferring to go for a coffee, pot of tea, orange squash or even tap water. Over the years I have disciplined myself to do this. I am sure that I am not alone in this.

I, like most people wouldn't miss an alcoholic drink if stopping off for a motorway break, I'd just look forward to relaxing at the end of my journey with one instead.

Wetherspoons on the motorway, great idea.

Those people will now buy beer during long journeys when previously they wouldn't.
Whether they're the driver or a passenger is open to question.
They could already buy alcohol at any of the services that have an M+S in them. Infact i did that last year on a long journey when I fancied a drink (when i got to my hotel obviously) but knew there wasnt a pub anywhere near.

Although I don't think for one minute that this is being launched to target blokes in cars. It's purely for the coach parties heading to or from an event in London or out.

Their carpark will be painted out for coaches with a few spaces for those lonely blokes whose lives have disintegrated and want to delay returning to their now empty home after a hard day selling crappy products they never dreamt they would have to resort to selling.

So maybe a 'Sorry no coach parties' sign up outside would do the trick though realistically I cannot see Wetherspoons doing that LOLdrink

If you can't walk into a pub without needing or having to have a beer then you should do one of two things, 1) hand your driving licence back to the DVLA and say I don't want it any more, 2) see an AA reprisentative and get your condition under control before it becomes a serious problem.

Typical daily wail, BRAKE rubbish about it being bad, think of the children and kittens etc etc.

True, we should ban all pubs which can be reached by road.

No, but executing all those who drink at a Wetherspoons or Yates might be an idea. wink

This can only result in apocalyptic carnage caused by Banker fat cats & immigrants slurping down obscene amounts of hard liquor before running over your children in their Gas Guzzler 4x4

The M&S branches at services sell booze and have done for ages, haven't they?
Exactly, and in my opinion most of the booze being sold at the pubs will be to coach passengers and truckers having a beer or two before they go to sleep for the night. Total non story.

Harsh, a Weatherspoons is a excellent place to prime yourself with a few cheap beers.

What I am finding amusing is the only person I have spoken to about this story who got themselves so wound up saying it is a dangerous idea and people will get killed is.................. someone who has never held a driving licence but convinced that all drivers will end up drunk on motorwaysrolleyes

I put it to her that lots of pubs are at the side of the road but those are OK as they aren't on motorways. Having pointed out that pubs can be at the side of dual carriage ways with 70mph limits I am told those aren't the same!

I can only hope that more public houses will follow suit and open up in places that are easily accessible by motor vehicle, as my wife enjoys nothing more than having her driving appraised after I've had a couple of drinks. She'll be over the moon about this radical shift in alcohol accessibility.

Good point if you are starting early. We use Sam Smiths pubs for the cheap firing up period.

I wonder if I can get the OH to believe the M4 is the quickest way from the North East to Birmingham and that I'm too poorly to drive.

+1, I'd happily use it when parked up there overnight!

She'll be delighted because the pub is on the M40!

In my experience weatherspoons is normally frequented by people who catch busses and go to the job centre every other week.

How will they get to this new pub?

Will somebody think of the scroates?

Perhaps they could lay on a shuttle bus.
Also, the food at weatherspoons is definitely not "decent quality" as another poster said. Cheap maybe. Decent quality not.

I dont really see the issue. A lot of services have a Travelodge or premier inn which have a pub - not yet have I decided to go get wasted en route! Likewise with the thousands of pubs which line each side of every road!

My only concern is that it will tempt the people who are happy to have 1 and drive. So instead of a KFC and Coke they will grab a burger and a pint. So whilst they are not "drunk", they are still under the influence.

That is exactly what I was just going to post. I have never seen a pub that isn't next to / accessible from a road. What is the difference between a pub on a motorway and a pub on any other road?

Christ, some of the stupid designs of motorway service stations, I could probably find a dozen pubs that are closer to a motorway already than this one is!
