The early S3 only made 210bhp, and the figures for the Polo R being banded about are around 1200kg. The current Polo GTI is 1,185kg and I imagine the R will weigh around the same. But you're right: in spirit they're quite similar though the Polo is a fair bit smaller.
It was quickly updated to 225bhp. The vast majority on sale will be the higher number. Of course they can be tweaked to 400bhp or more.

I'm simply saying for all the hype, if you want something similar to this new Polo R just spend £5k on a mint original S3.

Yes because most people would really be considering a 15 year old car as an alternative to a brand new one rolleyes

I know most people just want a new numberplate and a badge. I am not one of those people. All I am saying is if all you care about is the DRIVING EXPERIENCE, there was something very similar made a very long time ago. That is all I am saying. If there was a major difference I might be more excited, ie permanent 4x4, +300bhp out of the box, huge weight reduction, etc. But there is not. Just a mild adjustment of the numbers.

why not?

a 15 year old car with 150k on it will have been crashed on average 4 times with one of those being a significant crash
its going to have been owned by at least 2 barry boys one of whom has had it chipped and both have thrashed the crap out of it

whats not to want?

Because they are all like that hehe

The last mk1 Nogaro blue S3 I bought (two years ago) was owned by an old grey haired man, who owned it from new. It was kept under a blanket in his heated garage. The annual milage was 1500 as he only used it to holiday in France. It was exactly as per a brand new car. They do exist if you look and are happy to wait.

My mk2 S3 wasn't. Also we are now on mk3 which it might be worth trying as I was very impressed by it.

No. You're thinking of the Mk1.

I know. I had one.

The 8P S3 and Mk6 Golf R were far superior in every aspect. Steering feel, performance, looks, interior comfort, everything.

Back on topic, the Audi S1 is going to have 231bhp, so I think we know what the Polo R will have.

Knowing VAG product planning I'd be amazed if it had more than the S1.

Yeah it should indeed be the same. Bit confused about why the S1 appears to be manual only though, I'd have thought the DSG would work really well with this engine/ drivetrain setup.

Same here, won't be buying one if it's not got a DSG option.

Could space & weight be a reason not offering a auto option ?

Looking forward to the first on-road reviews of this - I'm tempted!

2007 from memory.

it will be less, all the lower ranges decrease in power slightly

That isn't true. The Audi S3 and VW Golf R for example both run exactly the same power and drive train
