I just read the cosworth stories thread and I remember in the 90's the tales that an escort cosworth was almost impossible to insure / own because of the ridiculously high theft rates and the thieves would do anything to get them.

Is there a modern equivalent?

AUDI S3?

I thought car theft was almost a thing of the past now due to modern immobilisers and anti theft mechanisms hence the rise in violent crime to actually get the car keys.

(Of course this excludes recent BMW’s which seem to be taken at will smile)

Urban fact/myth has it that fast stuff that doesn't look fast, but also has a bit of room, is popular with crims.

S3, R32s, etc

I suppose the car security is up a wee bit from the 90s, mind. They just nick the keys instead now.

S3 seems to attract theft - as do Audi RS4 models and the Golf R32.

When I had an Escort Cosworth was always worried about parking it anywhere in case it was gone when I returned ( even with a cat one alarm, tracker and a mulTlock !

I thought Audi's were the theifs favourite these days? I have no factual information on which to base that though, just things I've read and cop shows watched, it seems they are well liked.

On the other subject of cossies, I used to have an Escort back when Cosworths were No.1 and was looking at putting a replica bodykit on it. They had just come out, I went to see them and looked fab. Called the insurance.. conversation went like this, almost word for word...

Them: "How much do you think it will be worth when you've finished?"
Me: "About £7k".
Them: "Your insurance will be £7k".
Me: "Eh?"
Them: "We have seen this kits and they are very convincing. If it looks like one, it will be stolen like one and we don't expect you to have it by the end of the year".

And that was that! redface

Pretty much any modern BMW. hehe In seriousness, part of the reason I sold my Mk2 Focus RS was because of the alarming rate they were disappearing without keys being taken, especially from Essex! eek

Is this not more of a postcode related issue? I own property at both ends of the country, and don't have sleepless nights, regardless of what I have parked outside at either?

I thought the Land Rover Defender, was the most stolen vehicle in the country.
The fact you can open them with a can ring pull, does not help.

Had my mini stolen last year. Old car so easy to steal and worth quite a bit abroad or in bits.

Same with the Focus ST, had two random spot checks late at night in the past few months because of them - in Essex too.

Right now, BMW X5 and the M3, M5.

Ford Fiesta's are on the up.
Mercedes are getting a name for it too.

Not seen it happen much with Audi's.

There's a few reasons for car theft:

- cars stolen to be exported, to somewhere that doesn't check too carefully about where the cars come from. Premium SUVs are particulary prone, but other luxury/status-symbol cars too. Apparently a lot to SA (where they're also RHD) but other African states, eastern Europe and Russia, Asia and Middle East.

- cars stolen to be broken for parts. Usually fairly mainstream models particularly those the top of the performance/looks tree, eg. Audi S-Line/S/RS. Take some bits for dodgy accident repair places, take the nicer interior/bumpers/wheels/etc to sell to people upgrading their boggo A3/A4. How many people bother to check (or care) where their parts came from? Vans pretty popular for this too, always a demand for parts, plenty of metal there to scrap what's left, and the chance of something valuable in the back.

- cars stolen to be used in crimes - discreet (or even not so discreet) performance stuff, ideally 4/5-doors.

- joyriding. Not so much these days, but it does happen.

From my experience of where I live car crime is the biggest reported crime because it is a good postcode, there is an abundance of nice cars (I'm assuming), but there you go!
