I'm with the OP. When I bought my last car I specifically opted for a manual with no cruise control, no auto parking, no lane assist (it does have traction control however). I find that by doing without these things I concentrate a lot more on my driving and looking well ahead to gauge what the road and traffic in front of me is like. I'm not saying technology is a bad thing, but I believe if young drivers had to start off learning in cars that were "low tech" they would gain a better appreciation of what is happening around them.

'Risk compensation' is well established in driving. The introduction of ABS, for example, brought zero improvement in accidents because of risk compensation.
