Porsche Cayman/Boxster GTS spied

Porsche clearly upset we've been speaking about that Jaguar so much; here's the response

It doesn't quite have the allure of a 'GT3' badge, but seeing 'GTS' on a Porsche is definitely a good thing if judged by its recent efforts. The Panamera GTS is probably the nicest model in the range, and the 997 Carrera GTS was an appropriately excellent swansong for that car. If a Cayenne is more to your fancy, we'd bet that GTS is pretty damn good. There are one or two older GTS-badged Porsches that are rather special too...

Power will be up to 340hp
Power will be up to 340hp
So a Boxster and Cayman GTS will surely be very eagerly anticipated. Judging by the info that's leaked out already, the upgrades seem like familiar GTS fare; some additional power (up by 15hp, to 340), a sports exhaust, standard PASM and some minor cosmetic enhancements. Wheels will be the 20-inch Carrera S items from the 911, and yellow calipers of course denote the PCCB carbon brakes. They will probably remain optional on the GTS though. Despite the Panamera precedent, the Boxster and Cayman GTS are likely to have PDK and manual gearbox options. Thanks Porsche.

The inevitable comparisons will be with the Boxster Spyder and Cayman R. The GTS isn't as comprehensive an overhaul as with those cars, but it should be remembered that they were valedictory specials for the 987 model line. We're fairly early into the lifecycle of the current cars so hopefully there's more to come.

The GTS models will debut at Beijing. A price of $75,000 (£45,500) in the US has been suggested, without mentioning a specific model. For reference, that's $13,000 more than a Boxster S and $11,000 more than a Cayman S in America. With a Panamera GTS (£93,175) over £7K extra compared to the 4WD S (£85,721) in Britain, we would expect a GTS Cayman or Boxster to cost and extra £3-4K over the S at least.

Whilst the Cayman is undoubtably a nice looking car i also prefer the look of the Jag and Aston V8V especialy in coupe form.

The Cayman/Boxster look a little bit "soft" to me with the exception of the previous Cayman R model and the Boxster Spyder.

Are you sure?

Th Cayman is good looking no doubt... but "unique lines"? erm.... not really.

Resorting to calling the Jag names only solidifies the image of you stamping your feet in anger at the comparison wink

I happen to think the Cayman is a great looking car, not unique at all, but lovely and balanced whilst still remaining very strong to the family look.

The F-Type coupe is just stunningly good looking, period.

Can't wait. Probably the only contender on the market to replace my Z4M roadster.

On the Planet9 forum there is no mention of the sports exhaust coming as standard on the GTS. But PASM, 20" alloys sound certain, same with the 15bhp power hike. Based on that I'd say £3k to £4k increase sounds about right. With the PSE being a £1400 option (not that it costs much more to make over a standard exhaust) then I'd say closer to £5k.

Will certainly make finding a good spec'd car easier as a second hand buy!! Although would change the 20's for 19's.

With any luck they'll have tweaked the final drive on the manual cars to give it shorter ratios.

Sounds good. I think GTS residuals will be very strong so it's probably the most sensible buy.

I've tried but I just can't persuade myself to like the F Type. The head would continually ask why I didn't buy the better handling better built better engined Porsche and the heart just can't be persuaded to soar at the sight of the Jaguar. It just doesn't do it for me.

It would be my choice if looking for a Cayman and probably a Boxter too. What is good about GTS "trim" is that I would get most of the optional stuff I need without digging too much in the option list. Even looking in fresh used or delivery miles examples the common problem with recent Porsche is getting a lot of expensive stuff in the interior I really don't care to get some chassis/exahaust/power options I need. 997 GTS were also offered with interesting discounts back in the day just lo soon keep a good value on 2nd hand market.

"The inevitable comparisons will be with the Boxster Spyder and Cayman R"

why will they ?

they are more like the Cayman S sport and nothing like the R or Spyder.

Passive dampers, buckets seats, a real diff, light weight wheels, bespoke body work.
Vs a GTS with none of that, more a parts bin spec with 15bhp gain ie a nice speced up car, like the S sport was.

Dealer has had a deposit for mine (Cayman GTS) since the day after Jalopnik leaked the sales presentation. In the US, we expect to be able to place the order in June.

I'll be swapping PASM for the hardcore Sport Suspension though, plus adding PTV and Sport Chrono. I just hope there ends up being a fixed spoiler option. Also hoping for a return of the carbon fiber GT2 buckets to the US for the 2015 model year, though I'll get Sport Seats Plus (manual, not the electric ones) if the CF ones aren't offered in the US still.

New cars are never revealed anymore are they?

They are:

- Spied

- Leaked (usually intentionally)

- Other

Is this just more PR fluff from a manufacturer?

At least Porsche put the engine in the right place.

The Jaguar F-Type Coupe is an elegant car and more importantly is not planned to be replaced for some time whereas the Cayman/Boxster are due for a 2016 rethink methinks. Personally I would choose the Jaguar but to be candid the price of new cars leads me to the pre-owned market where there are better value choices such as Aston V8, Audi R8 and 911 for £40,000 and are pretty decent cars.So for me I'm going to wait until 2017 and see how depreciation affects the Jaguar and Boxster/Cayman.

Porsche models are on a 7 year cycle, which is to be expected for low-volume luxury cars, and especially sports cars. You can't have the cadence of high-volume economy cars when you make cars that are this expensive, as you need time to recoup development costs. We won't see a new Boxster/Cayman until the 2019 or 2020 model year. The Boxster has only been available for ~18 months.

Very likely. For Porsche, a GTS is a popular options pack, different aero, and a small powerkit for a discount over getting these options separately.

This will be the Spyder/R. Odds are they'll be available 18 to 24 months after the GTS models. I wouldn't be surprised if the Spyder/R get revised firmware for ePAS similar to how the 911 GT3 did. I wouldn't expect it, but there's a chance we could see the 911 GT3's PDK-S as well.

I'm also convinced that we'll also see detuned 3.8Ls in these cars (making 370HP in the Boxster Spyder, 380HP in the Cayman R), since there's still a significant power gap from the Carrera S, but that these cars will be pushing more around $90K USD (compared to $75K for a GTS, and $61-62K for an S).
