One of my cars has just passed its MOT with the engine light on. I thought the rules had changed now or have i got that wrong.

Among other things it has split front suspension bushes (front end is like jelly!) weak rear bushes leaking power steering rack and diff.

I am amazed it passed and its now off the road until the problems are sorted. I knew about all of the problems and have been working to get sorted under warranty so no surprises apart from the fact it passed !

Bit annoying as now the warranty co will probably try to get out of fixing it as it passed its MOT

Engine light is not a failure neither is the diff

Suspension bushes have to be
Literally falling out to fail

The only part that is a fail is the rack but even then it has to be seen to be leaking to fail

EML is not a fail. Leaking diff oil doesn't come into it. But it should have failed on a pas leak.
With the split in the wishbone bush it all depends on the movement in the bush it's up to the individual mot tester on what is considered excessive play.

Isn't the airbag light going out on the test yet or is that from April2014?

Anyone who has replaced the OEM wheel with a non standard item without airbag will have to replace it and ensure it is working.

SRS light illuminated, or not operating as it should is a fail, has been since last year.

It is amazing what can legitimately pass an MOT.

Also that people think its a tough test rather than actually that's the bare minimum standard and should be year round.

Last test mot I had passing the time I spoke to a tester about shocking things he had seen recently - too many to list but he said only the other day a car failed its MOT (bulbs, one snapped spring and all 4 tyres threadbare with 2 bulges on them. The owner kicked up a fuss about the garage trying to rip him off about bulbs so he drove it off as it was a total death teap with his kids in the back seats.... I asked can you not impound cars or if owner is getting irate report said car to the police. Can of worms and frankly not worth getting into.

In mAny ways electric cars will remove so many areas which wear out or break in certain milages and will instead last vastly longer so safer cars on average. Heck we should thank PCP as this is getting lethal cars off the road too ..

yes

Some people just do not seem able to comprehend that these machines require looking after to function correctly.

Srs light on is a fail
If it does not come on at all (bulb removed for instance) pass & advise

Ah ok , now i understand. I wouldnt consider it safe or roadworthy at the moment, its off the road pending warranty claim, only put through mot as i thought a fail would help my case. You live and learn eh!

Pas is leaking enough to have fresh fluid running down the rack, it was plain to me when on the ramp last week but apparently no sign of it now. Got to get it up on the ramp again myself to double check. Maybe they wiped it off and it didnt leak again while they had it in.

Engine light is emissions and a new cat is required but the actual emissions are still well within spec, i ran my own check before it went in.

I know that my usual MOT place would have failed the bushes as they are very weak, you can move the front suspension around easily with a big screwdriver pushing against it and the car needs constant steering inputs. But i can appreciate that the bushes are only split and not yet falling out so they can pass it.
