I am a die hard manual fan & I went with the manual for mine...but the engine does suit the DCT better as it helps remove the slight lack of low down shove I think & virtually all the cars I see on track on youtube are DCT.
Completely understand, but if all the power was available low down do you think people would be able to harness it? I am not a fantastic driver by any means but the most exciting cars I have owned in the past are my old 200sx & Cerbera & they never bothered with traction control just a LSD & I managed to keep them out of a field in over 10 years combined ownership...
The M3 is a different beast nowadays to what it once was I feel & I have experienced that first hand but that certainly isn't to say it cant be an exciting car when it wants to be.

If you are used to powerful RWD cars then yes! but I have never really understood why the latest M3`s have traction control as well as a LSD as I never drove mine with the traction on as a LSD gives you all the control & grip you need without the intervention of electronics anyway.

You're braver than me. I turned everything up to 11 and planted it in the rain. It snapped through 90 degrees in a split second and without any TC a slight correction turned it another 180 the opposite way. That's was not fun and it got dialled back immediately. I still overtook the car I was aiming too, although the driver had a look of horror on his face when I went past. I did the same in my first one, I fishtailed down the road very embarrassing for me so much so I turned off at the next junction. cerb4.5lee said:
It seems crazy to suggest that over 400bhp struggles with the weight of the car but that will always be a lasting memory for me & on many occasions I genuinely thought the engine struggled with the weight & that seems mad & maybe I need help!!
I have to agree. I test drove one about two and a half years ago. It felt underpowered, the engine was very 'peaky'I drove a C63 AMG a day later and that engine felt far more muscular with a more uniform and useable power band. The M3 also had very poor steering feel. All in all it did not feel like a very special car.

Overtaking a convertible version ... you could feel the engine struggling to shift the weight of the thing
a quick bit of coffee break googling...is an E93 M3 convertible really 1885Kg! No wonder it struggled E93 M3 DCT: 1,905 kg
E92 M3 Coupé: 1,675 kg
E90 M3 DCT Saloon: 1,700 kg
E60 M5 Saloon: 1,830 kg
E61 M5 Touring: 1,955 kg
E65 745i: 1,945 kg

I was happy I got to own a E92 M3 & long term I can see it being missed by many...it wasn't without flaws in my opinion though.
Cerb, would you like a new record? Rudeboy350Z said:

It is an immense machine... But I was 6 months into owning mine before I loved it.
A test drive, watching one go down the motorway, sitting in your mate's...whatever really doesn't do it justice. Yes it weighs more than an e46 but it is nothing less than ballistic and never struggles to move or handle its weight.
It's sad a decent v8 is going not because I don't think the m4 will be better but m wouldn't be downsizing if legislation wasn't forcing them to.
A unique engine is a signature of an exciting car to me.... As Lexus seem to have realised, now that is an exciting prospect!
Totally agree on the 6 months to get used to it. When I got mine last year, i thught i'd made a mistake after a month or so. Enquired about swapping it for an M135i even....A test drive, watching one go down the motorway, sitting in your mate's...whatever really doesn't do it justice. Thank god i persevered, as absolutely love it now. The gearing is a bit long but you get used to it. Although, it's the feel of the chassis, compliance and sound that really get under your skin.
Did the Piston heads Jaguar event at Oulton park a few months ago and after driving the XKR-s etc then getting back into the M3, it just crystallised why I like it so much.
The M4 will be much faster, better on the fuel and probably a great thing to drive. But to have as much character it will do well.

DCT better than manual? Discuss.
I hate auto 'boxes but I love the M3's DCT.7 very close ratio's mean you can use ALL the revs more of the time without doing 200mph.
Multiple settings, 11 in total I think.
Lightening quick changes.
Rev match down shift.
Launch control.
Suits that screaming V8 perfectly.
Doesn't feel disconnected like the early DSG systems.
Fantastic gearbox.
Measurably better in performance doesn't automatically equate to more enjoyable, that's what people take issue with when some say things like there's no point in having a manual 'these days'.
At the end of the day, choice is king, who knows how long they'll keep M cars going with manuals available.
