The ever progressing (global) police state:

'Police are urging Ministers to give them the power to stop vehicles by remote control'

I'm finding it hard to imagine why anyone would mind this unless they

A. Envisage wanting to be able to run from the police
B. Are happy with the idea of other people running from the police and killing innocent people in the process.

What's the problem?

Are you aware the article is over ten years old?

All for it. Police chases put so many innocents in danger.

How handy would this be for law abiding citizens though!

Car gets nicked, phone the police, "oh yes sir its currently on the M25".

That's strange. 10 years ago, I bought my first Impreza and was fairly paranoid about it being nicked.

One day it suddenly struck me that surely there must be a way of avoiding Police chases when such a thing happens, and surely the technology must be there to stop the car by remote control I.e shutting down the ecu.

legally dodgy though... you could be liable for the disruption costs through voluntarily blocking a motorway!!

Sadly true - witness a couple of the replies on the thread.

Some people are born to be serfs, I guess.

How's it going to work when the car is travelling?

the technology is easy. I read somewhere that virtually all new cars now have mobile data capability, so as long as you're in a service area you can communicate with the car. Cars have had BSI type electronics for over 10 years too, so you can issue commands to that, to do most electronic operations on the car. Send the immobiliser activate command over the air and there you go. It isn't even something that requires extra equipment.

I'm quite surprised the majority of replies are for

'Nothing to hide if you're innocent' I suppose would be their repliy

Most likely those would also say OK to things like:

Schools like prisons with high fence's, cameras everywhere and kids with swipe cars to name but one

however, the government isn't going to stop your car unless they think you've done something wrong. If you're worried the comms mechanism to be used to tracking your movements, then you're a tard for thinking this doesn't happen already.

Really?

You think the government is somehow full of staff who are only paragons of virtue, who don't lie, steal, cheat, or act in their own best interest?

The government is a large body of people, made up with the same cross-section as society. you should no more allow the government to do something than you would allow a random bloke who happens to be passing your front door.
