Yeah, personal achievement is vastly over rated.

I take it you have never done anything purely for personal satisfaction? That is what this is. No more, no less.

so what would be the UK equivalent of this attempt. (great driving btw)

I'm thinking Escort Van around Cadwell in less than 2 mins
or Metro 1.1c around Oulton in 2m25?

I'd give the van around Cadwell a go if anyone will lend me one!

I hope you've never heard of Project Apollo!

Besides, second hand he's probably paid £150 per engine and £50 per gearbox. Couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon before Pastis, job done.

For all we know he might have covered most of the 400,000 with those engines/trannies. Not exactly pricey per mile.

Funnily enough I was behind an Escort van when I went round the 'ring (in my Golf Plus TDi hire car, in definitely not a sub-10min time).

I wish I'd never sold my mint GT 2 years ago, one of the most fun cars I've ever had and I've had some fun cars!

Lord Benny, you'll be pleased to know its still going strong. I've added maybe 4000 miles since I bought it off you. Planning on taking it to the Silverstone Classic this year (I went 2 years ago and did a parade lap of the circuit with other classics on the Sunday), FoS, and hoping to get it on the grid for the Goodwood Breakfast Club Hot Hatch meeting in October (assuming its not raining that is!) I'm also contemplating taking it over to Spa for the Grand Prix. Makes me smile everytime I take it out for a spin smile

Spending seven years trying to get an AX round the ring that quick is probably a bit a obsessive. But either way respect on those entry speeds. Top man.

Each to their own; my AX GT was utterly appalling. Build quality of an Airfix kit made by Stevie Wonder; horrible thrashy engine; gearchange which varied between hot knife through butter and blunt knife through gravel; brakes which stuck on randomly , comically undergeared and seats designed for the snake hipped. Great grip and handling though.

Absolutely great - like many others it's the first Ring video I've watched all the way through for some time.

If anyone fancies doing something similar I have a SORNed 205 TD at home that I'd be willing to let go; or, for a bit more comfort(!), a SORNed Rover 218 TD - same engine as the Pug but with an intercooler (oooh!). biggrin No? Shame.

Top marks for effort!
Was at the Nurburgring this particular weekend and saw the AX in question flying around, as the photos at the end show, full commitment - wheels onto the grass, tyre squeal at all times and black smoke, but there was no question that he was trying hard!

Have been round the ring in a quattro and also owned an AX back in 87 so know how hard you have to work to stay in the upper power band with a petrol engine never mind a diesel. This is an amazing demonstration of real skill, total commitment and sheer bravery from a guy in a tin coffin with no crash-helmet and wearing shorts! Total respect.

No, no. That's a photo of the gay version you've posted.

The proper Gitane (of the Mais variety) is the real deal and looks like that:

Yeah well, these were only for sale in France - not in Netherlands. And today Gitanes or Gauloisse sans filtre is banned because of the amount of 'polution' that's inside.

Holy mother of thread revivals, but it's related so it's okay.

Back on topic of PSA diesel engines, the iron block version of that engine is far better.

If you know anything about these engines, you might find this interesting!

This is a 1.5D engine with a Lucas DPC fuel pump.

the hp figure doesn't concern me, but 2 other factors do. biggrin

How did they get it to make power up to 6,000 rpm? From fuel pump tweaking alone?
