The latest proposal by Highways Agency to install hundreds of speed cameras on our motorways simply has to yet another way to squeeze yet more money from the motorist. What other purpose could they possibly be installed for? No way can it be argued that on a road that is designed for speed will the cameras help to stop accidents, rather the reverse as people driving safely at around eighty when they see these disguised cameras, will naturally react, that will cause the accident.

I think that they have fitted a new style speed camera on the M25 near Clacket Lane.

They are putting up new gantries around this S/E section and on one there is a strange looking camera with what looks like a large flash unit.

BEWARE!!

But to answer your question, yes just CASH to pay their wages!

Well according to PHnews they are supposed to be an upgrade to the HADECS 2 cameras with a better version, well it means that they will be better at it then, I still think they are not there to help keep the traffic moving, they serve one purpose only.CASH

Doesn't the M25 / M1 / motorways with variable speed limits already have a lot of cameras.

Assuming they're not changing the logic behind when they fire, nothing will change.

All speed cameras are cash cows.

Think about it, speeding is easy to catch, it only takes 3-4mph to make some wifeswapping weak nannystate loving dick earn cash.

How can they be a cash cow when you have an option as to whether you go beyond the speed limit and thus incur a fine?

And you think 70mph is an appropriate speed limit on a motorway?

Largely yes, given the number of near-misses and examples of sheer stupidity I see on motorways I'd make the limit 50 mph but that wouldnt wash with the Clarksonians here on PH so I guess 70 is ok. You have to remember that whilst we may consider ourselves as skilled motorists, there are morons out there who shouldnt be driving at 70mph anywhere, let alone a three lane carriageway with other motorists in their close vicinity... Add in the potential for poor weather conditions and people's inability to keep their cars in a serviceable condition (all lights working, tread on tyres etc) and yes, I think 70 is fine...

I also think that 14 mph difference between HGVs and cars is about right, increase it to 80 or even 90 and the differential is too high, you catch up with things moving at 56mph quite quickly at 90mph.... apparently! wink

As I found tonight coming home, in the heavy rain, in the dark, with big puddles everywhere, it's not the limit that's the problem.
70 limit, people still do 70 at least. In those conditions.

70 limit for a bright sunny day, surely means slower is appropriate on a night like tonight. I was the slowest car there at about 58, and I thought I was too fast sometimes.

What can we do?

Have you noticed this? http://bit.ly/1famuJ7 A "consultation" to reduce M-way limit to 60. At first on 31 miles of M1, but does anyone believe that it will stop there? I suggest responding negatively to the consultation and then tweeting about it to raise awareness. Deadline is 3 March, so time is of the essence. It only takes about 5 minutes to complete, so well worth responding, even if you are cynical. Numbers DO count, as they have to be reported.

Not so useful, but still worth doing, is an e-petition at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/58944 the cut-off date of which is much later. It is not getting much attention yet, but could do if everyone who reads this responds and spreads the word.
