Good news then! Though that price seems rather steep to me. I'll be interested to see if it sells, and whether a standard car would be worth more or less than a modded car like this, albeit by a well respected expert in these models.

Drive a GT3, you'll see why its so much better than the Turbo.

Funny how the base 996's remain the most unloved of the 911 range and leggy examples can be picked up for less than 15k now and yet the 996 GT3 is possibly now getting to be arguably the most sought after 911 after the 2.7rs and the 4.0 GT3

I can only see well looked after low mileage examples go up in value.

I love these cars.

Seems odd anyone would want 996.1 GT3 over 996.2 GT3.
Give me the 996.2 anyday!!!!

Have driven a turbo (996), and been passengered around the PEC at Silverstone in a GT3 RS (997 Gen I). I wouldn't go as far as to say I don't get the turbo thing, but it would be a GT3 for me without even having to think about it...

Not the best example, but...

if you get a proper specc'ed 996 - its will provide a fantastic driving experiance.

It will never be a Gt3, but its by no means a different car in feel.

996 spec's that make then:

M030 suspension thats not worn.
LSD.
The power pack that takes then up to 320bhp ish.

Very good cars for the all the stick they get, and im certainly not intending on selling mine. Even after driving a Gt3 996, and several 997's.

Having not driven any of the GT3s or 911s I would personally prefer for £60k a really nice 997.2 Carrera GTS Coupe Manual (RWD)
I just think they look really nice and a really great all rounder

The Gen 1 GT3s were the last cars to be built at Porsche's Motorsport facility. Every GT3 since has been built on the same production line as the 'cooking' models.

It is this cachet, amongst other subtleties which make the first GT3 that little bit more desirable.

The MO30 pack certainly tightens things up, but the Carrera is an entirely different beast (and I wouldn't change a thing about it). In the GT3, its the engine that totally dominates the experience. Sure, you could trick a Carrera out with ££££ suspension and brakes, but it still wouldn't get close to the real thing.

Been there, done that etc.

Once you've driven a 996 or 997 GT3 you soon realise that these cars share little in common with the rest of the 911 range other than the overall shape and cabin. To quote an old Vauxhall ad, "once driven, forever smitten". Whoever wrote that slogan was clearly thinking of the GT3.

+1 My sentiments exactly. Arguably, the Carrera isn't remotely a beast at all in front of a GT3.

Agreed.

The engine was/is fantastic when I had a go in one.

However, past that, dynamically at least, they were not worlds apart.

Certainly not 996 = rubbish, 996 GT3 = The best ever.

Its gap that doesn't exist - not justified at least.

I am yet to drive a Turbo fyi.

(Just looking for offers :-) )

That's a different matter, but for now it is pushing assets up in price across the board - TVR Griffiths too are starting to appreciate.

I think there was a lot of money scared out of the performance car market during the crunch years. Even those who did not financially have to sell, sold to have the cash 'just in case'. Now, all but the most cautious of that money is back in the market place and, with new sales of such exotica depressed in recent years, is possibly bidding for a smaller choice of cars.

The 996.1 GT3 is interesting though to me, because it has shifted very suddenly.

I only ever drove the Palmersport 996s with their (utterly crap) flappy paddle lottery gearshift and was left frustrated and unmoved by the experience. I am happy to be told by those who know better that the GT3 is better than that.

For me, the 996 GT3 was and still remains the pinnacle of the 911 range. I'm not remotely surprised that prices are going up.

I think a £40k gen-2 has got to be a fairly decent place to put your money at the moment.

As a 996.2 GT3 owner I'm obviously delighted to see things like this, however this is the most expensive Mk1 I've seen that I can recall and lets remind ourselves that it hasn't actually sold yet - I'll be keeping a close eye on it though smile

I know many people would say it does not matter but I just can't get to grips with the interior. It's not classically beautiful like an old Ferrari, nor is it fresh and modern. It's a dog's dinner of hard scratchy plastic. I just could not bring myself to pay big money to sit in something like that, regardless of how good it drives.

This featured car's price is very much an outlier. The PH classifieds show some other cars to put it in context:

- Mk1 LHD for £29k (just had a price drop)
- Mk2 yellow Clubsport for £35k (just had a price drop)
- Mk1 with lots of Manthey bits for £43k (been for sale for a fair while, I believe)

£60k is not the new normal (yet!).

To be fair though mate, the 997 is hardly a masterpiece either. The interior remains the same as every 911 before it. Functional. It's the driving experience that matters.
