This featured car's price is very much an outlier. The PH classifieds show some other cars to put it in context:

- Mk1 LHD for £29k (just had a price drop)
- Mk2 yellow Clubsport for £35k (just had a price drop)
- Mk1 with lots of Manthey bits for £43k (been for sale for a fair while, I believe)

£60k is not the new normal (yet!).
But, none of these are a MK1 Clubsport !
Speculative dealer. Spot the difference.

A couple of years ago I was a passenger with a very competent track driver in his track prepared 996 GT3 and also my standard 996 Turbo.

I don;t know if it was the suspension mods but I have to say that his GT 3 made my turbo feel like it was broken.

Still, as an everyday supercar, the Turbo still has a lot going for it.

I foolishly sold that car in favour of an E92 M3.

Worst mistake of my life but am now back in a Turbo again.

Bliss!

Would anyone here really pay so much for a classic car that's been modified like this? Surely the value in having a mk1 GT3 is having something original. Paying £60k for something that's not original nor likely anywhere near the best track car you could get for this money would be crazy in my opinion.

Also, what do we think track use does to the value of these cars versus road mileage? i.e. Some low mileage cars have quite clearly been used extensively on track, my 996 Mk2 hasn't, but has done 50,000 miles, how to compare value?!

Crikey, one eejit sticks a car up at a daft price & suddenly they've jumped in value hehe

Seriously, let's not get excited, you can easily pick up a mk1 gt3 for anywhere from under £30k to a more sensible £45k. Who's writing this article? The seller?!

You might be on to something there! As much I think they're sublime to drive an aerokitted 996 is just a horrendous looking thing in my eyes. I actually love the look of an original 3.4 996.1 with ambers & no naff side skirts & spoilers (which only elongate the slab sides of the 996 & stretch it's shaped out of proportion I think), a GT3 "de-kitted" to look like that would look pretty damn good!

Remove the bodged up body kit, replace the headlamps with the correct ambers & put on some nice turbo twists instead of the split rim jobbies smile

(I hasten to add I know I'm shallow but looks do count!)

I was convinced I wanted a 996.1 GT3 after my 964 until I tried one (a yellow one just like in the pictures) admittedly it was wet but I was quite underwhelmed by the whole thing so bought a F360 instead! Loved it then still do now.

Saying that i did sell the E30 M3 before they went way up in value ditto the 964, so what do I know.

sold my 964 c2 to buy a clk 430...even more of a wrong decision....to make matters worse I now see the car from time to time to the guy I sold it to living opposite my little girl's nursery.....rubbing salt into the wound....how I miss that car.. pure, raw and simply the best drivers car I have ever owned..

The only people who don't recognise these GT3s are appreciating are Porsche Financial Services. I tried to finance one recently and the residuals were terrible. In the end I couldn't justify spending such a large sum of cash on a used car. I guess residuals never go up, only profit.

Agree with "kite-flying" comment - this price is speculative. I await the day when the original 3.4 plain-Jane 996 is suddenly collectable. I think that in years to come this brilliant reinterpretation of the 911 shape will become an all-time design classic, especially so before they widened the rump for the 3.6S. I'm on my second and I am still startled by the "What the hell is this fantastic looking car doing on my drive?" thought that hits me when I open the front door.

Actually, I dread the day - because then I might be afraid to use it instead of caning it up the road with the best engine note ever, which even my GTa struggles to match.

I think the Mk2 spoiler looks pants compared to the mk1 (and I've got a mk2!)

As a result,I've just ordered a Manthey one from JZM biggrin

I figure this GT3 is going to become the new Escort Cosworth where NO ill can be said about it. I love the GT3 and Turbo ( never driven either) but I think I would love the turbo more. Because reading a lot of the posts in the porsche section it seems like its more a track car and too raw for everyday or road use once owners are truthful

That's said give me a 5.0 997 anyday but would probably buy a 997 or 993 GT2

..actually the car was nicked off my drive...recovered/new locks etc and I had nowhere to keep it secure so I sold it and bought a compromise...regretted it ever since...it was a late 964 c2 93 K reg, cup pipe/cat bypass, rs rear bumper black non sunroof...with 59k miles... and prob worth a few bob more now..it will be replaced with another 911..options wide open as to which..

A really interesting thread. 996 Turbo Powerkit, disappointingly anodyne, I couldn't get my head around so much thrust with so little drama and a 6,000rpm redline. So I completely get this race into GT3's if you've got the income to support a bit of leveraged man maths.

So where's the value in the pantheon of the 911 greats? I think it could be in a straight 15k's worth of manual 3.6 996 at the moment. Unfortunately anything brand-Metzger has left the thrall of us lesser mortals so we might as well start piling into the bestest / straightest affordable 911 we can.

Falling that go and buy a pukka E46 M3!
