Nothing new here and all a bit pointless. Most petrol heads would go for the manual V12V and manual 997 GT3. Nice film though.

While I am grateful for more footage of the V12 Vantage S, I think the crucial comparison everyone wants Harris to do is a back to back between a manual, hydraulic steering 997 GT3RS vs paddleshift, electric steering 991 GT3.

His view on the matter would be especially interesting.

Shows how much the excellent value and innovative GT3 has raised the bar against the archaic Aston and middling Merc both of which are grossly overpriced....yes

Too many shouty yellow bits on the A....and as for the Mercs Halfords aerofoil, well, nuff said...hehe

Hmmm, taken on their respective abilities as road cars I took the gist of the message to be 'the Aston has nicer steering, the Porsche the better gearbox' - and as I shift every so often but hold the steering wheel 100% of the time... wink

As the GT3 is the only sports car of the group, perhaps a better Porsche contender on both price and driveability characteristics would be the 'sports GT' 991 Turbo S....thumbup

Well of course the Porka is ahead of the other two it is supposed to be. However I would rather date a sophisticated beautiful and less expensive girl with manners and a beautiful voice than one who is slightly better in bed, has a huge arse, sounds aweful when she opens her mouth and drains my wallet. So no Porka then. Aston every time.
If you think the GT3 sounds awful then you need a hearing aid. Totally different sound the Aston V12 but its still one hell of a sound.

But one day you'll be at a party and someone will ask who drives what, someone will say-
"Merc" (everyone's thinking of a tatty minicab), "Porsche" (Nice but common) you reply- "Aston Martin" (in the Jaaaag style ;-) and childish as it may be, you'll know you have won.

For the money that GT3 is a bargain, I know £100K is allot of money, but if i'm honest, I thought the car would have been the £120K bracket to start with. Cannot wait for the GT3 RS.

Not sure I understand the appeal of the AMG as tested. I really understood the more traditional AMGs: looked almost standard (except for those in the know), had unnecessarily large engine for extra power but were still big, comfortable 5-seater Mercs underneath. The C63 Black Series has the compromises of the true sports car like the GT3 (2 seats, harsher ride) whilst being more expensive, larger, much heavier and still based on a much cheaper, series Merc. With rear seats perhaps there would be some arguments in its favour. I assume AMG still sell them as planned so what do I know but wouldn't be on my shopping list.

991 GT3 seems to be awesome but I think Chris hit the nail on the head: if you use that 9000 rpm redline in 2nd or 3rd you will be going so quick that your licence and liberty will be at risk.

So my pecking order would be GT3 > Aston > AMG but I'd rather take an older, slower car than all of them to reduce risk of trouble with plod.

Evo did a twin test of the 997 GT3RS 4.0 against the 991 GT3 and it was no contest. The 991 murdered it on a tight twisty road.

They concluded that the 4.0 was still a very special car but it had it's pants completely pulled down by the 991.

I thought the sound of the Porsche at the high end of the rev range was fabulous and exciting.

What will a 991 GT3 do in 2nd and 3rd? I'd have thought about 60 and 100mph.

My 'comfort spec' GT3 without £6k ceramics option around £114k.....

T Turbo S more 'standard equipment' at £140k.....still think this would be a better 'sports GT' comparable in this particular test......thumbup

As brilliant as the Porsche I think is it's lost the kudos it afforded the driver...when you seen someone ragging a GT3 you knew they could drive..know your thinking "how easy is that to drive"..
it wouldn't bother me as from an owners perspective as I think its all about the experience, but you have to imagine similar conversations at Porsche meet track days etc..although we all claim not to willy wave, anyone who has been in a car club knows it happens

So either the 997 GT3RS was 'not all that' after all and the delirious fawning by the motoring press was unjustified...

or the 991 GT3 is somehow enormously faster and more capable than its power to weight ratio suggests and some of the more absurd claims for its performance are true.

Which of these is easier to believe? For the 991 GT3 to be as fast as some are suggesting is if it has a lot more than 475bhp.

The only way for a smaller car with a better power to weight ratio to be 'murdered' on a tight, twisty road is for the road to be very bumpy and for the suspension to be totally unsuitable for at that kind of road surface. Sounds like the 991 GT3 is a much better road car than it's predecessor but you can expect the tables to be turned on the circuit.

Tap the GT3's weight and power into the Torquestats performance calculator and it suggests 4.0 s 0-60. Porsche claims 3.3(!). Of course, the calculator does only differentiate between RWD, FWD and AWD and doesn't take engine position into account, and the PDK shifts are ultra-quick apparently... but still there's only one shift in the 0-60 dash...

FWIW I thought the 997 GT3 4.0 RS - 991 GT3 comparo was a bit more nuanced anyway... yes in raw terms the new car was a lot quicker they said, but as far as which one provides the most rewarding experience it was a lot less of a clear-cut case according to the piece.
