Hello everybody.

This is my first post so all views are very welcome !

I know its a while away but i am going to be turning 21 in june, and i like to plan ahead.

I am really in two minds about what car to go for when i hit the big 21! The Audi A5 3.0 tdi S line or the Vauxhall astra VXR GTC.

Both of these cars are stunning and really sporty.

I am one of these people that like a good car with good fuel economy and a good bhp return, but when i ask a few of my mates, they say that the audi A5 Coupe is an older mans car frown ? Is this true ? And others say that yea thats a beauty of a car.

Although the astra vxr is a stunning bit of kit, i think that in a few months time i would really get annoyed with its fuel consumption.

Any thoughts are welcome and go easy !! Haha wink

Thank you in advance

Hi and welcome. Be prepared for anything here!
A friend of mine had an A5 3.0tdi when he was around your age, looked very nice, chipped with s5 grille etc, but he got fed up with it very quickly and sold it shortly after buying and making the changes.

I think the Astra would be better for you, but the insurance will kill you.
I spend the best part of a year usually when planning to buy a Car!
Good luck.

Thank you very much for the speedy response.

I got a pleasant surprise with both of these in reference to insurance giving my age as 21 to see what the future of insurance would hold haha.

Both are quality cars but im not to sure if the astras fuel return is any good , i get on edge with the amount of fuel my wee 1.2 corsa sxi uses hehe.

So im really stuck frown !!!!!

Have a drive of them, they are hugely different cars.

I'm not keen on the whole Biturbo idea, the 160 + remap is probably a better and cheaper option.

What sort of car do you actually want?

Cruiser?
Hot Hatch?
Quickish diesel?

Can a mod please move to GG please.

Yea i think i will try them both !

Its basically between the Audi A5 3.0 and Astra VXR

Im just looking for a good all round car : good fuel, speed and comfortable, but im not to sure if im too young for the A5.

Both are so appealing in there own ways , just very hard to decide frown

Im not sure how youve come to the conclusion that an A5 is sporty, its not, what is, is a very capable long distance cruiser which can pick up its heals and go like st off a shovel when required, it can be hurled around but its not really suited to it. The quattro also makes it hugely capable in all weathers. If i had the choice at your age i'm pretty sure an Astra, VXR or not wouldnt even get a look in. Find an A5 with a good spec, i.e. Nav and B&O and the interior alone is on another planet let alone the refinement.

Get a decent hot hatch or saloon, petrol. Diesel tractors are for old men.

Your 21 the audi will bore you to death within ten minutes, you can always get an old mans diesel car in a few years,

There is a post about the VXR going in general gassing forum on here.

I can personally recommend the Astra but expect 28 mpg with mixed driving.. That is what I've got over 8000 miles.

Ok, so I have a v8 Monaro at the moment and on a run on the motorway it only does 27mpg at about 70 ish.

Could anyone out there let me know what I can expect on a 35 mile motorway run to and from work to see if I am able to afford to get an an Astra GTC VXR for daily use.

Thanks

I have an A5 3lt TDI its a good car , around as fast to 60 as an S5 with great mid range acceleration im getting 40 mpg average over the last 6,000 miles it corners as if on rails but has a bit of a crashy ride .

My only gripe with the car is it feels a bit numb and disconnected however competent it is

I think the A5 is a much better looking car
