Hahahaha, this is my only car and I've done over 2000 miles in four months. It's going to have silencers.

I have to say though - even stock, these things aren't quiet when you gas it. Nor should they be - but allegedly if you don't go too crazy with the exhaust mods, they don't drone too much either unlike my old midship inline 4s. I'm looking forward to the accentuated bassy rumble without the resonance on the motorway.

Not so much the bills, though - the shape of the C5 exhaust system is ridiculous, so the labour is expensive.

Mufflers and tips:

Cat-back pipes - to be replaced by ever popular 'X-pipe':

That is probably best with the mileage you are doing. The drone without can become very tiresome. They do sound fantastic at full chat though.

Agreed. Still, you have to have SOME lairyness on a Corvette... Especially a black one.

The uninitiated may look at that picture and think you are working at the front of the car. In fact it's the back, highlighting the rear-mounts transmission and other primitive Corvette features! smile

Interesting floors too:
"Up to 2005, the floor panels were balsa wood sandwiched between a fine fiberglass and resin matting.
Prior to the 2006 model year, Corvette floor panels used a sandwich construction that featured end-grain balsa core, machined to shape between facesheets of glass mat, wet out with resin.
Since the floor panel design carries most of its mass in its facesheets, it was calculated that it could reduce the weight of each panel by 1.5 kg/3.3 lb, if the glass were replaced by carbon. So, 2006 and up, it is carbon sandwiching balsa wood.

A friend of mine had exhausts fabricated by Pro-Speed in Cardiff - didn't cost that much either.

Also partly why the C5 has such a good coefficient of drag. You can read all about it in the book "All Corvettes are Red".

Big pipes (as big as yours there? Maybe not...) inbound. It's just the old dilemma of what first... Pipes, or wheels? Or intakes?!

Tax comes in at the end of this month - very respectable at £225. Dents the car fund though. I've also covered just over 2000 miles (34000 total) in the car now, and despite it reporting to me engine oil life is at 97%, I plan to do a full synth swap some time around about 35000mi. Partly for the experience of doing it on this engine, partly as a precaution.

Anyone who's interested in seeing more photos of this car or watching it develop, have a look on the website THRLL.

Excellent choice of wheels sir. I too have made the V8 plunge (again - this will be my third). My Porsche 928 was in Carpool back in December, Unlike you the best mpg I have seen on a trip was 22!

I just thought I'd necromancer this post - in the name of an update or two and to answer the query some folk had about MPG coming out of the Corvette (I mentioned 35). I know you all don't care about MPG (or at least pretend not to!) but I'll dispel all the nay-sayers with a screenshot of my Road Trip app wink

So, first thing's first - I've covered about 8,000 miles in the Corvette now, since I bought it in October of last year. Good going by any rate! Trips have included a 2,000 miler to Europe, encompassing France, Belgium and the Netherlands. It has also transported my snowboard plus another for a friend, plus the friend, to the mountains! She's been used properly for sure - but I've still to strip the back tyres of their tread sadly, despite periodic efforts... Likewise I've enjoyed some sublime drives, particularly a 16-hour jaunt to Applecross and back in one day, and also the famous Duke's Pass road - six times in one day, chasing or leading a friend in his Integra DC2.

I've also made some modifications to the car - really, it's got everything it needs - but I love to personalise.

Now, some pictures!

The car as she stands now:

(Nothing much to see here - just tidied up and all stock so far. Intake mods to come.)

(Note painted calipers, painted flags in centre caps of wheels - nice little mods!)

(Go Pro runs!)

(One from France!)

(And one from the road up to Applecross - bliss)

Here's a properly nice video of the exhaust installed and being run on the dyno for the first time. Over 300 at the wheels, and 372 at the fly read on a Dyno Dynamics roller.

Finally, the bit you've all been waiting for... MPG!
The MPG - truthful recount over the course of 8,000 miles - check the scale bars!

And one from the 2,000 mile Eurotrip:

And finally - I've booked into Le Mans for next year. This car, along with some tidy company including a Noble M12 and a 993, will be driven down in June next year via Santander ferry port, and correspondingly the Pyrenees. Absolutely cannot wait.

Cheers!

I tell you - there's a lot to love about owning it. I really can't think of anything I'd rather have just now. Sometimes I imagine maybe a 996 GT2, but there's no way I could stomach the cost of one and I'd bet the insurers would still giggle at me. Plus... The V8.

It's just such an excellent all-rounder.

The app is called RoadTrip and I believe there is a lite and a paid version (I use the paid version - allows for more than one car, various other features - I had previously used lite version but app is worth buying!)

The icon for it is red and has a petrol pump on it I think. Brilliant app if you remember to use it every single time you fill up.
