An oil filled dampener used in old school carbs, some to dampen the throttle response and more famously in SU carbs to dampen the motion of the piston.

Dashpots are what we have on SU carburetors, you know, the things before throttle bodies. Basically there is a piston with the needle on the end that rises up and down in the dashpot as more vacuum is applied as the throttle is opened. The piston is damped by about 30 grade oil, but you can also use 20-50 in them as well.
Or whatever crap oil is lying around the garage laugh

Years ago, my local motor factors used to sell 15w40 for something ridiculous like £4 for 2 litres. I always imagined that it was probably sourced from the oil disposal point at the local tip, after being poured through a coffee filter.

To the guy with the rusty leaking oil filter, at least with a leak he knew he had oil in it, & at speed the oil would coat the underside therefore helping prevent corrosion. Also leaks mean you are always topping up, thus having a continuous oil change - what's not to like?

Damper!

Stop making things wet, it won't mix with the oil.

I'm with OP on this, I bought some cheap Wilko 20w50 once and it did feel suspiciously watery. I'm sure it was fine and exceeded whatever my tired 40 year old engine actually demanded but I just couldn't bring myself to use it. The cheapest 20w50 from Asda felt better.

Maybe the Halfords/Comma Classic stuff is unusually thick.

It's probably fine... but I wouldn't go near it. Esp as GM 5/30 can be had for less than that.

It will be made by someone like tetrosyl so I wouldn't worry.
It is!

Und...5w-40 gold container matches VW505.01 spec for those pesky PD engines so is highly shear stable...

Comparing specs through the tetrosyl site[s] is enlightening whistle

And instead of purchasing a top of the line "ester" for say £60 plus incl postage/filter and leaving it in for quite some time....I change my 1.8t oil/filter every 2500 miles for £27 and let the diesel detergents in said^^ gold^^ oil gently maintain the cleanliness of my engine internals

Whats not to like.??

I know it's probably not in the least bit of interest except for those looking to save a few ££..

..however the company in the title are the only ones to date who will confirm who makes/supplies their own branded oils, the others contacted quote "commercial confidentiality" .....but will still sell you the stuff...

no naming/shaming rule applies...

I use whatever is cheapest with a £400 car it doesn't matter to much at the moment castrol as it was on offer in tesco £6 for 2l of Castrol GTX but happily use the tesco own in the past to no ill effect.

Before this turns into an oil brand snobbery thread it's worth noting that (obviously) ASDA don't make their own oil so common sense suggests it's a 'proper' brand but with their branding.

Isn't Tesco oil Comma oils?

I know all oils are not the same but those of us with Lambos and Astons won't be topping up with ASDA oils. For Mr Average I'm happy they're just fine.
^This.

If your in the position of wondering whether supermarket own-brand oils are good enough, then they are very likely to be good enough for your car/ cars.

If you were able to afford to run something extraordinary, you wouldn't be asking the question. Same principles apply to supermarket petrol imho.

Note: I can't afford to run something extraordinary, and have run lots of relatively modest cars problem-free with eg Halfords oils for many years.

Euro Car Parts are doing 20L of triple QX fully synthetic 5-40 for £53 at the moment. That's 3 of my cars taken care of!

Not only SU's but I seem to remember that Strombergs of the day used a similar damped system.

The offer last week in Asda was 5 litres of oil for £15, so I stocked up. Normally 5w-30 Castrol Edge is £34 at ECP

We used Dextron in SU pots, a 'secret brew' used by a well known racing outfit turned out to be Windles clock oil.

Virtual pint to the first person who knows what SU stands for.

Well Done that man, did you perchance involve the demon google. How do I do a virtual pint? Instead I will engrave your name on the Standard Vanguard starting handle role of honour. I might have a box of Thackeray washers somewhere if you need any.

I used to religiously change oil every 6k with Mobil 1 in my Pug 1.9Gti.

My mate used to use my 'used' oil in his Vx Carlton every 12k.

Both cars were over 120k miles last we saw of them....

He also used my old oil instead of back to black on his bumper trims.

True story!

I now use whatever is on offer at ecp.
