And it's probably possible to fit more people into an old Mini than a DB9 and on that bombshell those DB9 owners must be kicking themselves that they didn't spend the money on the Mini instead.

To be fair I'd say the GTI looks better certainly a nicer nose whereas the 135i M rear looks good side fine front (not seen many) but it doesn't look aggressive enough for me - I'd certainly happily own one though.

Two things I'd note - I drove a Mk.7 GTi with the power pack on Saturday morning - capable, fun and rapid. These are good cars, no question.

Secondly, this is TV, the screen grabs of the instruments 'just before the spin' could be from anytime at all - perhaps another day on a dry runway. If you watch the spin I doubt you'll even see the Golf in the background (I certainly didn't notice it when I watched the show last night). Certainly the shot of the BMW on the grass, with the Golf going by, was very staged - do people not realise this?

If I were BMW's marketing department I'd be pretty annoyed - it doesn't do the marque any favours in the eyes of the layman in my view.
If I was behind the wheel of the Golf, and a BMW spun out across in front of me, id probably get on the brakes as soon as I was able and was sure the thing wouldn't spin. I certainly wouldn't continue at 100+mph.

A moot point as a classic Mini is far cooler than any Aston anyway.

Most of the M135i threads on here would suggest that you'd have to be a bit of a moron to choose the GTI (or any other hot hatch) over the M135i, with the normal quotes of "25k for a golf, FWD cr*p, dull 4 cylinder" "etc etc.

But that test did point out a few valid reasons to get the GTI, better looking, more practical and safer handling (although shouldn't be an issue in most situations). It also looked very tidy around the track too for a FWD car, with a time of just 0.5 seconds slower than the Megane R26.R. I'd probably still go for the M135i for the extra performance if I was in the market for a new hot hatch, but I don't think the decision is as one sided as many seem to make out.
I'd go cla amg

It was also more than just wet. I think it warranted a f for fapping wet. The standing water was really bad when he was sliding it all over chasing the golf. I dont think that track has good run off at all.

Only 50mpg average speed but over 1 hour of driving it must have been really tight fun B road blasting hanging out on the revs.

Don't these cars do silly high Mpg IF you wanted to.
This wasn't trying to hard to get a decent read out, cruise control between Beaconsfield and Anfield. You can easily get 40+ with a little effort.

Two expensive cars. One practical, one more fun. Choose whatever makes you happy. Personally I think a car should not need esp to stay on the road. If it isnt inherentantly safe, why are we building them so powerful?

The fact is the safer you try to make it to compensate for dumb drivers the dumber those drivers get.

Oh my word! A car spins after hitting water doing 120mph and you guys are calling it unsafe?

I'm a massive fan of TG but even I know Jeremy Clarkson stages things to make good television.

That is very impressive.

How good can the Golf be? Well into the 40's mpg?

I thought it was a great test. Now everyone on Pistonheads who has leased an M135i is going to have to spend their time explaining why they chose an ugly, impractical death trap. That should at least make them sound a bit less condescending on "what car?" threads.
