adding 6 inches of metal between wheel arch and glasshouse of a (very) normal car does not count as car design.
Thats what BMW did all the way through the 80's...worked pretty well IMO
I mean what they have done is designed a normal car and then added 6" of metal to raise it up and turn it into an 'SUV'. So I have even less respect for it as a piece of design than something designed from the outset to be an SUV.

BMW were not playing that game in the 80s at all, they were making handsome, nicely proportioned, sharp and stylish cars like the M635CSi.

Indeed, the niche within a niche within a niche thing is all very well, and customers can't seem to get enough of it at the moment. It works because BMW/Audi et al have a huge reserve of cachet and good will build up over many years.
They're now cashing in those reserves for what will probably be a relatively short-term gain. Once the reserve is spent its gone forever, and then customers will start regarding the 'premium' Germans as just another bunch of mass-market car manufacturers.
I doubt it. As long as the cars carry premium pricing and reliability remains decent, they will not suffer at all. Not sure how their previous business model of building one sausage in three sizes made them any more or less "premium."

I'd imagine that I'll be driving one of these by the end of the year.

The X6 is just a little too big for parking spaces so hopefully this will be slightly more practical.

Ignoring the "ugly stick" comments which I truly don't understand, the X6 is a remarkable car. It seems to suffer from JC not liking it and everyone jumping on the same bandwagon. The rear window may slope, but so do all coupes. If viewed as a coupe with superb visibility, great handling and obscene power it just makes sense.

This looks like a baby X6 which will no doubt be another hit for BMW.

Was the X6 a hit? Its hideously ugly and why you would pick one over an X5 is just beyond me.

No idea what JC said about it. Like a big boy, I decided all on my own that to me, the X6 is one of the ugliest cars on the road.

X6 & X4. Remarkable? yes. Capable? Probably. Sales hit? Certainly.

Good looking...? Hmmm

I agree.

There is no merit in that design anywhere.

If you want a sleek stylish sporty coupe, buy one.

It's not an SUV in any way shape or form. You just sit high at great compromise and cost for the benefit of style over substance.

No shame on BMW as a business for appealing to that market... but their integrity is taking a big bashing from my perspective.

But in all seriousness... What sort of niche market buys these??
I suppose they (BMW) have to keep up with the competition. Plenty of Audi offerings. wink

The front and rear don't look too bad but they are a little fussy, but the side profile! Oh Jesus, it looks more noddy than the noddyness in chief 1 series coupe.

Porsche Macan or X4? Even with the price difference it's not a difficult choice.

What a shame. Soon to be patrolling the streets with st, over-bassed music playing, and some dickbag hanging off the steering wheel with one hand.

Mostly sold in white.

BMW: The Ultimate Douche Machine

Come on BM - what happened to the glorious shriek of the M3 CSLs, the bellow of the GTSs, the interesting stuff. Instead we get... the 2 series dork bus; the X4 dick tractor.

I don't know man, I just cant get excited about BMW the way I used to many years ago. Perhaps it's the brand dilution - including its M division - along with the aggressive pursuit of filling niches.

And we could see an X4M if they make a business case for it?

Looks better than the X1, X3 or X6! I also like the X5 a lot.

When are they going to make the universal BMW. Call it the BMW 1. A mix of all the series.. I can barely point out a new 3 series from a 4, 5 ,6 or 7 series?! Even the 2 series looks similar.

Could be like the iPhone, you buy a new one every year and it will look the same, but with a new feature that's been around years before, which you won't even use. Perhaps bluetooth connectivity for a tamagotchi?

It seems BMW have tried to make the X6 seem 'prettier' by releasing ananother model that is even uglier! How have they released a car as good looking as the 4 series gran coupe and then come out with this...

Truly horrific, it makes the X6 look elegant. That rear.. layer upon layer of mish mashed sections, with some black plastic in there to try and disguise the height. Ugh.

Bring back Bangle, all is forgiven!

Rather than have a go at BMW for making such a monstrosity.

I propose a cull of everyone that actually buys these things so therefore they wouldn't feel the need to make such a monstrosity.

Seriously, what the fk are people thinking?
