Alfa Romeo 4C - those headlights

Alfa would have to be daft not to put those lights from the 4C Spider on the coupe too ... oh, hang on

What's the most talked about aspect of the Alfa Romeo 4C? The incredible feat of offering a carbon tub on a £50K mid-engined sports car? The welcome return of Alfa Romeo to building beautiful vehicles? The admirable step aside from the horsepower arms race and focus on light weight, non-assisted steering and real-world relevant performance?

A no brainer to put these on the coupe, surely

Nope, it's those bloody headlights. Four big stories on PH on the car thus far; the originalannouncement, followed by Harris's launchdrive and subsequent video before his more recent second one against the Cayman. 1,326 comments between them. 1,325 of them expressing horror at the headlights. OK, possibly an exaggeration but they remain a huge talking point. Not since the bug-eye Impreza have a set of lamps caused so much consternation.

Whether it was PH power or just recognition of the fact the coupe's 'eye infection' items looked a bit aftermarket it was good to see some 'proper' headlights on the 4C Spider at Geneva last week. A sleeker single projector under clear cowls, they very much resolve the slightly awkward face of the 4C coupe and would seem a no-brainer rolling upgrade or even retrofit option for those 4C coupes already built. Right Alfa?

Wrong! "At this stage they're still prototypes on a car that we won't see for at least a year," says UK PR man Conor Twomey, going on to explain that the design "reflects the more elegant, less extreme nature of the Spider" and that "there are no plans to offer them on the coupe ... We don't even know if they'll make production or not yet."

Here's hoping.

Sorry, Think I prefer the lights on the coupe to those rather clumsy cowled ones on spider

It sounds a bit childish...but I wouldn't buy a coupe simply because of those awful lights. Still, I'm sure there will be a aftermarket company that will make a fortune selling ones that Alfa should have fitted in the first place.

I don’t think its childish and I feel the same way. It’s like a Mona Lisa with a mustache.
The coupe prototype looked perfect, the production coupe looks awful. The spyder prototype looks perfect, the production spyder... well, I am not getting my hopes up.

If there was ever an opportunity for an aftermarket solution, this is it.

Agree. The Aftermarket boys in Hong Kong or China will have these out in a jiffy.

If I owned a 4C the lights would be the last thing on my mind when I went out for a drive, assuming they work of course. They may be the weakest point of the car but blimey what a car, I'd have it warty lights and all.

Marchionne said in an analyst call that the cost saving on the lights (presumably from the original 4C concept) was $4m, so I don't really expect the Spider to have anything different. Maybe the upwardly revised production numbers will change that though.

This should do the trick.

Now I wonder if anyone is making a carbon fibre replacement dash yet.

I'm no Photoshop wizard (don't even have a copy)... but would it not be easier to just colour the orginal white car in red for the comparison smile

Much better. Original production headlights spoiled the exterior looks. Unfortunately the sign of accountants penny pinching are all too easy to see elsewhere on the car, particular in the tatty interior and the underwhelming engine. I was excited by the concept car but will not buy a production car regardless having seen enough to be turned off.

Jaguar F-type and Porsche 981 are too strong competitors and both offer slightly different style, quality, comfort, driving experience trade offs to each other.

PR man says "At this stage they're still prototypes on a car that we won't see for at least a year"

PR man means "Please, please, PLEASE don't put off ordering one of the current cars on the basis that slightly later ones will get the new lights"
