Morning. I’m new. But enough about me.

Monday saw a trip to a BMW dealer, a test drive of what I think might just be the best car in the real world and a £75,000 impulse buy. Oops.

I nipped in to look at a 1-series for my wife (but ended up getting a MINI). I know the DP and he was just getting out of his car – a 640d Gran Coupe. He suggested I had a drive.
20 minutes later I returned.
20 minutes after that I’d put a deposit down on a brand new MSport version.

313bhp & 460lb ft torque with an (alleged) 50mpg, all wrapped up in a beautiful (eye of the beholder and all that…) bodyshell and an unquestionably great handstitched, leather lined interior. Great accommodation (for 4 at least – third rear seat is child only) and a cavernous boot.

Result is 0-60 in just over 5 secs and real world performance to annoy just about any 4-seater car….in an almost two-tonne diesel.

Car arrives in a couple of days time. My excitement is palpable.

Expect me to wax lyrical ad nauseum once that day arrives. My apologies in advance.

The depreciation is going to be immense. Especially as so many 640d models are out there on cheap leases that are about to start dumping the market.

Unless you achieved a significant, significant discount, I'd say you made the dealer's day.

Welcome and congrats. You will get much interest if you post pics of your new arrival, especially if you can include a tin / carton of custard in the photo.

Also, expect several people to point out your folly in dropping such a huge amount of cash on a diesel biggrin edit - ah, I see 10PS got in whilst I was typing my reply biggrin

And an almost equal number telling you that they would have leased it instead.

And then a bun fight with some name-calling, hair-pulling, spelling/grammar pedants, possibly querying your sexual orientation/political persuasion or use of the phrase "your mum".

Welcome to PH!

Really like them, great choice I say. 640d is the pick of the range too...

Dealer/BMW gave me £21800 discount/deposit contribution (benefit of walking in on the last day of the quarter)
Bought on PCP. Depreciation isn't my problem!

Dont look at the price of a nearly new example as that might take the shine off your day wink

I always thought it was (some of) the newer members bringing the place down, seems I was wrong.

Since when did people have to act like such bellends?

If the chap is happy with his purchase then good for him, why come over all clever telling him how much it'll depreciate or which alternative model he should have bought? What does it achieve?

OP, enjoy your new car.

laugh

It's to "prove" you own the car basically - a photo of the car with a tin of custard* sat on the dash or whatever.

If you hang around for a couple of weeks until the schools break up for Easter, you'll see a lot of posts where the OP is claiming to have a "P1", "La Ferrari", "Phantom", "Zonda" etc. When asked for proof with a tin of custard, the OP invariably disappears, or a crappy photoshop turns up, or they don't own a camera, or they can't post pics because of Data Protection etc.

Saw my first 4-door 640d in white last week. I'm not 100% sure but my OH thought it was fantastic.

  • Other condiments are probably acceptable.

Already did that.

Even 1 year old examples cost more than I've paid for brand new, like for like.

Factor in the PCP and the new car is £10k cheaper and better spec'd than a 12 month old/5000 miles AUC. Gotta love the bargaining power of end of quarter.
