how are they illegal? They have tax, insurance and MOT (hopefully) just like your car, they have every right to be on the road as you do.

Does this also mean motorbikes should be banned because they're often loud and sometimes ridden by yobs? Oh and maybe the car should be banned because they're often loud and sometimes driven by yobs?

There is law in place for 'anti-social feral chavs' why does it matter what mode of transport they use?
If they have straight through exhausts/no mufflers - yes, ban them from the road. It isn't a race track, not a contest for who can make the most noise.

You must live in a parallel Britain where those riding ATVs on the road aren't complete and utter cretins.

What an absolutely stupid OP.

I saw a rather smartly dressed chap pulling away from the petrol station on one last weekend. Had a little chuckle with the chap at the next pump, who was also a bit of a petrolhead.

So that's two votes in favour of the 'anti-social' monstrosities.

(plus the chap on it, so that's three)
Nope. They're a nuisance, driven irresponsibly by the type of people who don't give a toss about you, me or the police.
That sounds awfully like a description of me in my Cooper S with its ridiculously loud JCW exhaust. At almost 50 you'd think I would have grown out of being such an enormous tt but being one is just so much fun.

I owned a quad bike for a year that I used on the road.

I'm fairly certain that I'm not an 'utter cretin' or an 'anti-social tt' as you so eloquently put it.

I also consider myself to be reasonably intelligent, have a fairly responsible job and bought myself a helmet when I bought the bike.

So out of curiosity, how do I fit in with your utterly ridiculous stereotype?

I used to see a quad regular that was obviously being used for commuting. Rider wore a helmet and seemed to ride sensibly that I could see. Also seemed to be road legal, always in good nick/clean. Surely the emphasis should be clamping down on dangerous or wreckless driving rather than the type of vehicle?

Also seen an old guy on Skye using one as his mobility scooter. Complete with folded wheelchair strapped to the front!

I worked for a shop that sells on and off road quads and got the chance to test drive a fair few on the roads (from 50cc off road ones to 700cc on/off road ones)

They are good fun for about 5 mins until the vibrations make your legs turn to jelly.

The best I drove was a Honda Rincon 680cc one. 680cc and a live rear axle made it interesting.

Nope. They're a nuisance, driven irresponsibly by the type of people who don't give a toss about you, me or the police.
They're a nuisance in context!! Any mundane object can be put to anti-social purpose if used with such intent. For instance if I were to load 'The Best of UK Garage' or something into a stereo and play it at top volume next to your ear; that would also be anti-social. However no-one would suggest banning either CDs or CD players.

I agree that there is the potential danger to other road users, but that comes as standard with any motorised transport. Quad Bikes are lighter than cars - so possibly better in that respect.

But... There is another aspect. Quad bikes move. If they are being anti-social near you they are pretty much guaranteed to go and be anti-social somewhere else in a few seconds. If some other, static, anti-social behaviour is committed then it's an enduring problem for someone, as opposed to some noise for a few minutes.

However a bit of messing about on bikes is hardly that bad. Some people have to endure far worse daily, such as targeted bullying, damage, assault and actual crimes. I'm sure someone must have ridden a quad bike past my house in a silly manner, but it doesn't matter day to day. I'm far more grateful that there isn't any actual anti-social behaviour in the area.

So I hope they don't ban them - if only because saddo types get annoyed by their presence.

I don't know why people are so bothered to be honest.

The type of people who make a nuisance of themselves on these are the same type of people who drive them like utter retards and wear no safety gear.

Quads on the road seem like a sure fire way of removing undesirable genetic material from the overall gene pool.
We should be giving the damn things away to certain parts of society.

Why should you be forced to do something for your own safety??
Because we (the wider public) have to pay the services to scrap you up in a worse state than if you'd worn some safety gear I.e. A helmet. So costing us more money.

Tbh anyone who doesn't like those who cycle around without a helmet is just one mistake from somethig they can't undo. (I've been on a ride were someone went down at 30mph with a helmet and the only reason why the paramedics had something to do was because his helmet saved his life)

I've never seen the appeal for quad bikes as a fun toy on the road. All the negatives of motorcycling with none of the positives.

Obviously as a work tool they are useful. Off road I would still prefer an enduro bike.

I don't know about banning them - I agree that we shouldn't start banning everything - but the ONLY people I've EVER seen on these on public roads have had no license plates, no helmets and were riding like they believed they were Ken Block. I almost got hit in the side by one yesterday as he powerslid out of a side road to my right. There certainly needs to be some notion of driving standards hammered into the oiks that ride them.

The ATV isn't antisocial, the "cretin" riding it is. Why ban the vehicle, just ban the person.

The majority of anti social driving I see is from people on off-road motorbikes (ie not registered/taxed or insured). Prior to that it was mini-bikes. I wouldn't want to ban all bikes just because a few are being idiots.

As has been previously suggested - the vehicle doesn't need to be banned, just some types of people who ride them.

Same thing for Harleys. If you're not in a biker gang of some kind - and have never hit someone with a chair in a bar fight - then you shouldn't be allowed to ride one.
Fat old gits on their second midlife crisis, who think that owning a Harley somehow gives them some kind of cachet or cool, need to have a fking strong word with themselves - my idiot FIL in particular.

I know of at least two in my rough area being ridden like a video game with no insurance or road tax.

So the OP's comments are not totally unjust.

I'm with the OP here. Nothing wrong with the farming type quads, the ones round my way though are more racing style quads, tiny wheels, loads of suspension travel, ridiculously loud exhausts and they seem to live on the local council estates, also ridden like the owner has a death wish.
