Hmmm sounds reminiscent of my '86 TR.

The car and its engine 'lived apart' on different sides of the garage fairly frequently.

A great car once properly set up but many places don't know how to do that despite assuring me they did. An expensive trial & error exercise.

The rads were a nightmare too as was the bloody relay that popped the headlights up - often decided not to work on odd evenings.

Best car I've ever owned though

It does make me feel an ache in the pit of my stomach that you sold a (deep breath) 997 GT3 RS 4.0 for this and the 599. Now that was a appreciating asset!

About 20 times... a Main Dealer serivce on my Focus ST in 2011 was less than £200.
Not a full service, you sure that wasn't just an oil change? Or you have the best Ford dealer in the land. £395.10 quoted yesterday for a mkIII petrol Mondeo. Needless to say I am not going there.

It's always the way with cars of this vintage. My 355 is currently under the knife for a new clutch but there's been all sorts of other little bits that need doing and it all adds up.

The bill is soon forgotten though.

I point this out continually to people.
Running any 20 year old car will need some patience and understanding.
Things like radiators (water and oil), rubber hoses and seals and all other perishables / long term consumables are bound to need replacement.

Its whether or not you have he time, patience, skill or dedication (or cash) to undertake all that.

Incidentally, its why service history is often just nonsense and condition backed by receipts and ideally photo evidence of work done is the best guarantee of reliability and lower running costs, as is evidence of regular usage (ie, higher mileage).

Just my 2c from experience.

Persevere Chris, they are worth it.

As an aside, 512's sometimes eat diffs, so maybe worth investigating and/or getting the oil changed as a matter of course. A replacement is eye watering (if you can find one).
Couldn't agree more ^

Wow - and to think I have been worrying and fretting about an up-coming complete engine rebuild on my Corrado which is going to cost less than your service bill. Puts things in perspective somewhat smile

"Why did you sell that nice Porsche?" queried an old pal, just before my fist crunched into his solar plexus.

£4k on a 20 year old Ferrari seems a bargain considering I just had a £1k bill on an 8 year old Fabia VRS!

512TR..problems...but worth every penny (or rather thousands!)

Mine thankfully has been ok..(ish) so far..needing at new windscreen as the lamination had gone around the edges, and I was lucky enough to buy the last one from Eurospares.

I had Barkaways replace the screen, and in doing so they removed the dash and were able to replace all the old foam that had disintegrated, making the dash creak!..also having had the screen replaced I now had a working screen aerial, which meant that I could have the roof aerial removed, which meant filling the hole and respraying the roof too... then the air conditioning fan seemed not to be working which was traced to a faulty main circuit board...which was sent away to be reconditioned...so after just over £5k I drover the car home...and then just putting it away I realised that the indicators did not work, the mirrors did not work, the windows did not work etc...so...the board was removed once again and all the relays were replaced for new...all for a couple of hundred quid extra...and now....wow...its just amazing...apparently its like giving birth very very painfull...then afterwards you love it to bits!!!

Pah - my Dads bill from Lovetts for his F430 was just shy of 5k wink

Getting my TR belts done next month, but won't be going to a main dealer. Its the first time it'll be serviced in my ownership (only bought it last october). Looking through the service history theres some monumentally scary bills including £16k (yes £16,000) for a gearbox rebuild....

Chris, I'm just glad you haven't sold it. As soon as you get it back, go for a drive, and change from 2nd to 3rd with the open gate, you'll have a massive smile on your face

Happy flat 12 motoring...

These services are inevitable occasionally and the car's probably gone up by the same amount so you just have to suck it up. At least you're likely see it back if sold. Unlike those FF payments...

From his twitter feed, I'm funnily more intrigued at the story of his S4 gearbox, which as I understand it is now lunched....

Great car and write up - please keep going Chris, as said above you'll probably recover most of this in appreciation!

This said...engine out for camshaft end seals is incredible.

Chris - in answer to the question "why did you sell the Porsche?" don't feel too bad! I recently bought a 35,000 mile, FSH, 2-owner Cayman S and in my 5 months of ownership sunk £3,000 into replacing the clutch, dual-mass flywheel and ultimately the gearbox before giving up and getting rid! It still needed new brakes all round when I sold it....none of these problems were evident at the point of purchase/test drive.

Moral of this story? As a % of value, your bill was a lot better value than mine, so it's not all bad! smile I'd much rather a 512 to drive around in...!

I started off feeling sorry for that Maser with bird sh!t on it.... And then I read the story and feel sorry for your wallet too.

At least "Big Red" will be appreciating nicely to help negate big bills - Same can't be said for the Maser
