Living by the sea, as I do, I can confirm that you're right to be nervous.

I'm not convinced anything would make me buy a car from Liverpool or Manchester. A gun to the head, maybe. It wouldn't surprise me.

I'm not so sure. A lot of people in Liverpool seem to have pretty high disposable incomes, property costs have tended to be pretty low and pay is quite high. There are also some very wealthy parts (and some bad - but then so has London).

Edit: with apologies to all north western threadists.

As a north westerner I am slightly perplexed as I don't think you are joking. So you wouldn't buy a car off me? I don't have a gun to force your hand either.

I'm also surprised as there are plenty of decent cars around Manchester - we don't all live in scruffy council houses with old mattresses and Fords parked on the front lawn.

Funnily enough though, during my early car purchasing years I had nothing but bad experiences looking at cars around Liverpool, yet a Scouser I worked with insisted in driving back from where he lived near me in Greater Manchester to Liverpool to buy his cars - he refused to buy any advertised locally. I avoid any car advertised in Liverpool now.

I would never buy a car from London - but that is more about the way London cars are used and treated, rather than snobbery.

The south coast is a good place to find barges. There's always a few retired gents after a smaller runaround and the market is dead for big cars.

My best cars have come from Scotland and Cheshire - specifically Macclesfield , wilmslow, knutsford etc. all private sales too. All my mistakes have been because I bought from a dealer irrespective of location.

On a separate issue, for those going to SS, is there any plan or RV to meet, or are we going to rely on an innate ability to spot a fellow 1-5 saddo amongst the thousands of people there?

I suppose the folk drooling over r129sl's estate can safely be assumed to be kindred spirits?

Shall I bring a balloon or something? It's just, well, you know, awkward, meeting men off the internet.

How about meeting before-hand at a local petrol station - this tesco for example is 1 mile away

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=petrol+statio...

could meet there at 8:50-8:55am or so?

edit - dropped the E65 in earlier to get that suspension looked at and said I need the car back before they close on Saturday whether they get it fixed or not!

oh, and balloons would be fine, maybe one of the hot variety, like this would be OK?

ok - count me in. Probably more room in the supermarket carpark than the petrol station though.

1997 SWB (decidedly tattier looking) with 91k £3,999: http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C476259

That one looks like its up at £2800 to me. I rather like it in Aspen Silver with Black Sports Seats and M Paras.

Are you looking for one to buy Len?
I always have an eye open in their general direction...

Interesting, that car I've had an eye on for 10 days/couple of weeks and it's been £3,999 all along. Now £2,800 and open to offers.

I wonder what just borked expensively. hehe

Fuel costs are often bandied about here.

What is the general consensus on LPG?
Those who have it love it. I have it installed on my 530i M Sport Touring and love it to bits.

Ok I'll be there, will look out for any W124s....is it just going to a W124-fest plus me? hehe

I'm leaving with a group of other PHers from Petersfield at 8:15.

I'll be arriving on foot with the bored-looking family but probably not before 9.30am. Anyway, this is me (I'm the one in the glasses):

Edit: to reduce the size of my ugly mug and to apologise for ill-judged attempt at humour about north westerners.
