Sometimes Ebay delivers in spades. This arrived this morning. £40. And with the original box. Lovely condition, although I appreciate it's not quite period for my 1991 500 SL. My wife just laughed at me when I ran upstairs and waved my new knob in her face. Apparently I'm "some sort of saddo". I'm sure it'll get more love here.
That looks very smart what's it replacing, plain leather one?My ebay purchase yesterday was a hybrid digital TV for my S8 - £300 for a small silver box with a fan on the front.....
Goes off to find an old Audi or Lexus to post in the thread

The Lancia Thema, Alfa 164 or SAAB 9000 are all better versions than that. If you were driving a Croma you'd feel you'd lost out by quite a bit.r129sl said:

That is fab. But the egregious clash between the steering wheel and the rest of the veneer is a real short-cut. Shouldn't have been allowed. Either a fully matching wood-set, or a leather wheel.http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/j...

I have the same knob on my SL. It is a lovely thing. It was a £175 option when new so goodness knows what the part price is. I can see £124 on the box but I suspect it would be rather more than that. I love Ebay. Although I buy a few things every week, I am still like a child waiting for the postie.Edit: list price for the gear knob is £308.40 inc VAT. So a bit of a bargain there. I love my wood and leather wheel, too.

Could be a good load lugger
High miles but if maintained the M50B25 is a very strong lump, manual gearbox too and leather interior

as an aside - Derin - you say the W124 is very noisy compared to the E38....what is the W124 like compared to an E34 for noise? I remember them being more noisy than an E38 but didn't think they were too bad. Are they more refined than the W124?

I had a soft spot for these in period. The body has a cleanliness which stands out as unusual. They shared a floorpan and suspension with the Saab 9000 and Lancia Thema (or was it the Dedra?) is that right? Could they be had with an interesting power plant? Obviously the Saab and the Lancia could (8.32 anyone?). It is interesting how slowly Fiat died down into a maker of small lady cars, isn't it? Once upon a time they had real panache, I'm thinking of the 130 saloon and coupé, the 124 spider, the 131 saloon and then the Argenta. Mind you, by then they were a bit rubbish of reputation. I also liked the Tipo.Edit: Alfa 164, that was the other one. And a bit of Wikipedia-ing tells you could have the Croma with a 160hp V6.

After FIAT bought Lancia and then Alfa that was the deathknell for luxury FIATs really. Similar in a way to VW persisting with the Phaeton when most buyers want a big Audi instead. Edit: Alfa 164, that was the other one. And a bit of Wikipedia-ing tells you could have the Croma with a 160hp V6.
Also the Fiat Dino deserves a mention but well out of thread budget now

Our W124 estate is certainly noisier than an E34. I don't remember my 230CE seeming this noisy. The 300CE has been in my garage all winter so I can't really remember (and I've hardly ever driven it anyway!) but I think after days of fiddling last year I managed to get the windows to sit correctly when closed and got wind noise down to levels certainly no worse than the estate.High miles but if maintained the M50B25 is a very strong lump, manual gearbox too and leather interior

I think in the estate it's not just the wind noise though. I guess estate cars generally tend to be noisier inside than saloons. However, for a big 3.2L engine, the gearing in top gear really seems too low to me, hence it's revving higher at motorway cruising speeds than I'd really like.
The other ones that have gone the same way are Peugeot and Citroen. I know everyone bemoans the death of Citroen as a maker of interesting cars, but the Peugeots of the 1970s and 1980s were really svelte and stylish in precisely the way today's Audis, BMWs and Mercedes are not. Really in a way no maker's cars are anymore. Cue Friday nostalgia-fest.

I do love E34s, but it cannot be anything less than a late 525i for me power-wise. a 535i or a 540i would also do very nicely. They seem to be quite hard to get hold of these days unfortunately.
