Ambitious pricing, just out of budget, but's our increasingly familiar friend Mr Check Cloth again, this time in blue. Is that wheel matching blue?

High quality older cars used to have pretty much everything colour coded when you choose a colour other than black.

Check out the S8 final edition of the D3? audi, that is how not to do a colour change, couldn't have been carried out any cheaper unless they gave the owner a bottle of leather dye and told them to change the colour themselves.

Wow! We are on fire at the moment.

Those earlier 129s are really growing on me. I saw a later model at Combe recently, and am wondering if my suitcase will fit in the boot. Any owners care to measure up for me, please? I think the wind deflector would have to go...

I've got a handful of cars to post...tomorrow.

It does, but this era of Mercedes was trimmed in glorious leather; thickly cut and well cured. Much better than the plastic-esque rubbish the equivalent BMW was trimmed with. Hence the Mercedes seats tend to look inviting and fresh, and the BMW seats often look like hammered st.

I've missed a lot today, by the looks of things. I like the cloth 140; I like the mega miles S600 coop even more. I always think that if it has made it that far, it must be a good un.

800miles in 24hours in the 124, again. Left Newcastle 9pm last night; stayed in Oswestry Travelodge. The glamour. A big coop might look all too Partridge. Then down the A483/A40 to Carmarthen for a noon appointment. I must say, what a brilliant if slow route. I can see why one of our number lives in Shropshire, too. What a glorious county. After lunch in Carmarthen, I headed back over the Evo hairpin (the mountain road) then retraced my steps. Up the M6 to Carlisle (was tempted to do a 20mile detour to Gretna just to do the three mainland kingdoms in one day) then over the A69, up the A1 and home. Glorious, glorious motoring. I sat by the Evo hairpin for half an hour just taking in the view. Also paused at the little bridge they use so often. There were some tts filming a pair Fiesta STs (with no number plates), all very Nathan Barley. What surprised me is how short this bit of road is: not much chance to stretch the legs of the supercars they are always testing up there.

That's a shame! You were only about 3-4 mins away from me! You could have popped in!

I see what you mean: you are close. But anyway, I arrived at midnight and left at 8am, so just a flying visit. I am back in Wales next week, and the week after. It would be a pleasure to meet for a drink. I'm not sure I'll be using the A483 route again, though, beautiful though it is. It took me about 8hours (including stops) to get home from Carmarthen; whereas it usually takes me 5hrs30 from Swansea on (incredibly boring) the Heads of the Valley-A40-M50-M5-M42-M1 route. If you're around, pm me and we'll see if we can find a time.

A few questions for the beards (you know who you are). Would a '90 SL have potentials loom troubles and what would be sensible precaution jobs? Aside from the usual fluids/oils/filters. Does the SL have the same weak 5 speed box as the later 124's?

The M119 is not an engine I have any experience of at all.

I think there were 12 cars imported in total in that spec, at least 2 of them have been written off... You are better off saving and buying a LHD M5 Touring if you want the ultimate E34...

I'm in love with this car- is it wrong on pistonheads to want something to waft around in, rather than thrash !!!

realistically what MPG would this do and what would be the road tax.

I've got to solve my desire for an 80's 90's mercedes......... of all things, I'm thinking absolute luxury is the way forward.

my word, this car has absolute presence smile

I do about 7000 miles a year- can I afford to put fuel in it !!!???

I wondered how long it would take someone to find and post this!

I nearly always attend the Classic auctions at SWVA in Poole as they are very local to me. Plan to attend next week and will probably have a bid on the s600. Got outbid on a Bentley at the last auction....

Anyone else going? Will try and take a few pics and post up some results of the barges.

Let us know about your new collection, don't mention how devastatingly cheap they went for.

The M119 is not an engine I have any experience of at all.
I think a 1990 model will be too early to have the loom problems. And if I'm wrong, it is likely that they will have manifested themselves and (one hopes) been cured by now. The problem seems to affect 1992 to 1996 cars.

The weak 5 speed box is not really weak. It is just that some of them fail at high mileages whereas other Mercedes boxes seem to last forever. Anyway, the box in question is the 722.5 (these are the first four digits of the transmission number, which is printed in the car's data sheet). As you know, it is essentially the four-speed box with an electronically operated fifth ration tacked on the end. The only 129s that came with it are the 300 SL-24 and the 280 SL/SL280, 320 SL/SL320 up to 1995 or 1996, when it was replaced with the 722.6 transmission. This latter is a fantastically strong box, but it can leak transmission fluid from an 'o' ring on the diagnostic plug connector. If undetected, this then seeps up the wiring harness into the computer box and ruins the EGS module! But you'll spot a pool of tranny fluid on the garage floor long before that happens.

Precautionary jobs? It depends on how anally retentive you are and also how intensively you intend to use the car. You all probably think my approach is irrational but I justify it by the expectations I put on my vehicles. I think the list below is a thorough but not over-the-top list of what you might do if, after say a month's use, you decide a car is a medium- to long-term keeper:

  • engine oil and filter
  • transmission fluid and filter
  • coolant
  • air filter
  • fuel filter
  • cabin filter (if fitted)
  • brake pads
  • brake fluid
  • brake discs (but only if necessary)
  • poly-v belt
  • spark plugs
  • battery
  • steering damper
  • front ARB bushes (very cheap, take a pounding, make a big difference, should be a service item)
  • chassis brace bushes (ditto)
  • clean and lubricate all hinges and latches
  • bulbs
  • transmission diagnostic plug (if a 722.6)
  • ball joints (if the removable type)
  • tyres (if necessary)
Do all of that and you have a total base line from which to start enjoying the car. I doubt it would cost you much more than £500 (excluding the tyres), especially if you did it yourself. Do all of this and it is likely that your 24 year old SL will be in better shape than all but the newest cars on the road.

For a car which is to be used hard/for the mildly OCD owner:

  • shocks
  • shock top mounts
  • engine/transmission mounts
  • brake and fuel lines
  • brake callipers
  • rear sub-frame mounts
  • steering links and idler arm bush
  • rear suspension links (if worn)
  • front lower control arms (if worn)
  • seat cushions (surprisingly inexpensive)
  • alternator/alternator regulator
You can go on and on from here and my experience is that changing mechanical parts often is worthwhile but the quest for perfection will never be fulfilled, at least, not if the car is to be well used. None of this stuff is heartbreakingly expensive and much of it can be done in the driveway with a basic toolkit, a good jack, a pair of axle stands and a bottle of beer.

The M119 is a great engine, had no problems with it in my S500, beyond a ticking sound from the rocker covers that was easily fixed.

I do know that the SL320 pre-late '96 can have the same loom problems. After this date they're ok.
