6.0 litre V12, 70k, finishes in 20 min, currently at £4k
There's a lot to like there. Looks JRG in the pics (although described as silver). Just to repeat 6 litre V12....

Gearbox going pop is most likely due to someone believing that you don't need to change the fluid for 80k miles rather than an inherent weakness.
I think it is poor for a gearbox to fail at 80k fluid change or no fluid change, particularly bearing in mind the issues Audi had with gearboxes in the previous model. I know it is not an Audi gearbox but it is interesting that combined with the 4wd system they are going pop in D3's as well as D2's.
I'm not sure d3 boxes are going pop in great numbers? I'm a member of the a8parts forum and don't recall anything bar 1 or 2 problems caused by lack of maintenance or a common issue with slipping which a different fluid spec and corresponding software change to the box resolves

Plenty about on 150k miles with even an oil change being quite rare!

My 5 speed zf boxes in 2004 A6 (sold today!) and 2002 S8 are both good as new after fluid and filter change and no issues at all in our ownership. Even the same box in a BMW isn't unknown to need rebuilding - none of them last genuinely for ever

I'm not sure if they are or not either, which is why I commented on the fact that this one appears to have done so. Even the last of the line D2's seem to be much better in the gearbox department than the earlier ones.

With respect to power- i believe the phrase you are looking for is "An Elegant Sufficiency"
190bhp in a large barge doesn't match that definition
Indeed. I do find it strange though, that the W124 still garners such affection. It is inferior to the W140 S Class which goes relatively unloved. Odd that the admittedly well-made family car/middle management car would be so well regarded when the W140 and C140 were so much better.

Admittedly, the D2 A8 isn't the most inspiring steer but it is what you make of it. It's fast, refined and will go round corners and gobble up rough tarmac like it's going out of fashion. That is the joy of these big beasts; they're beautifully refined and they make driving effortless. That is what I miss, being out of the barge game at the moment - that muscular V8 whirring and pumping under the bonnet; effortlessly deep reserves of power when you need it and wonderfully refined when you're just tootling. Magic! I'd rather that than slumming it in an old E Class, but different vinegar strokes for different folks. hehe
The W124 and W140 saloons are quite a different experience to each other.

I appreciate the subjective nature of these matters so will only say that for me personally, the the 124 and the 126 are both elegant of line, whereas the 140, admirable chunk of engineering that it is, looks more like the box the other two came in.

I used to agree but now I think time has been kind to the slab-sided Swabian.

C215 is just unremittingly vulgar inside and out, could have been designed by Koreans for the Subcontinent. Definitely take the slight awkwardness of the C140 in preference.

Good report.

So it really does actually sound like one worth having.

It would be very rare to get any car this old with perfect paintwork unless it's all recently been re-done. So if one were buying it as a keeper it's an excuse to get the whole thing done in one go and then have something really nice!

Sadly, like you, I just can't justify having one.

The 140 interior is something special - a real high-water mark for Benz. Look closely at the interior door handles of a c140: they look and feel like an item of superb quality.

Imagine all the bills are paid for you (because as a big old bus built at the time when the CANBUS in cars was taking off, and with multiple electronic hubs in the car's circuits). You'd soon accept the W140 as superior, unless your ability to own the car was stifled by having on street parking, or having to pay for the fuel yourself.

Similarly, I make an assumption that you could afford to buy and run an old W140. If you couldn't, the W124 would probably be a better fit with less to go wrong. However, I still don't believe it's worthy competition to the W140; it isn't and it wasn't at the time, hence it being sold against the 5 series and not the 7!
