Best Smoker Barges 1-5 large [Vol 7]
Discussion
Chaps, not sure if anyone is in the market but there's an decent looking E28 528 just off Chobham highstreet with for sale signs in the window. Couldn't see the price but it looks very originaland I could see any obvious rust on my slow drive by, paint a bit faded but can't see it being expensive with only 2 hand written signs in it!

Not in the market (I'm banned until my car is back on the road) but I do love 528 e28s - get some photos please!andy43 said:

The 140 was a contender for the best car in the world at the time. I miss mine now. Please change the subject.
I'm not looking necessarily to spoil your Friday evening, but these two won't help! Quite different mileages; I prefer the grey moon-miles one myself. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C520211

Rather appealing.

I really like that - little wheels, big engine, e39ness. The colour is difficult - call it what you like but it's still purple. I just don't like purple cars [disclaimer: personal preference only!]

That's the way I remember it too - the Pagoda was always an expensive car. The R107 hardly dropped for a very long time too, with seventies cars still fairly expensive even in the mid-late eighties.
In 1991 I sold an immaculate (freshly re-sprayed) 150k 1979 350 SL for £9k and an immaculate 80k 1982 380 SL for £12.5k, if that info is of any use to anyone. Does make one wonder how or why R129 has become (currently) so cheap?

Tidy old 300 bus for those oop north. Bill shows why its madness not to do a bit of diy.
Agree. Especially when you see that a lot of that work could easily have been done by a fairly novice home diy-er?Tidy old 300 bus for those oop north. Bill shows why its madness not to do a bit of diy.

Volume produced perhaps - I'm sure a merc beard can provide all the necessary stats (split by engine, year, and lhd/rhd)!Does make one wonder how or why R129 has become (currently) so cheap?
The R107 had an iconic shape which instantly connected with the public as a shorthand for success. R129 was never so universally loved to start with, but I suspect the main reason is that the whole Mercedes brand doesn't have the prestige it did.

very tidy 5.3 XJS from a dealer who stocks some decent, and reasonably priced old stuff (including nice merc 230 ce)

That's lovely, the market is finally waking up to these cars. I think I'd go for the 6.0 Celebration if I was going to jump in. I quite like the facelift shape and by then they were about as sorted as they were ever going to be. The only thing that worries me slightly is that my 4 year old 3.6 manual XJS was a bit of a pain in the arse, so one does have to wonder what kind of blood pressure raising frustrations a 25 year old example would be capable of throwing at you! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jaguar-XJS-5-3-HE-V12-Au...

They just don't have the same glamour. The R107 was a hugely glamorous thing; a real Cheshire wife's car. Every other rich woman seemed to have one, have had one - or want one up here back then. They had massive prestige.

Twas indeed a car for rich women.

They were never going to be perfect. I found out one day when I sat in a car wash yard in a 1994 6.0L. When the guy pointed the power spray at the car it was like a tropical rain storm INSIDE the fking thing! But a cheap car to maintain; no garage bill was more than a few hundred quid (next car was an E34 M5, which proved to be a bit different!!!). Liked a drink, even with 4th auto gear, but always great character.

Yup, cheque is in the post. Right.
TBH it's a 700 quid car regardless of the big bills.

The wife chose our R107 - back in 2007.She can't stand the slabbyness of a 129, it didn't matter how much I tried to persuade her it was the better car.
So yeah - the choice of the lady. Though I don't feel compromised driving it.
The decision making process actually went like this:-
ME: We're young and have no kids, I demand to buy a fun car to replace our golf with the savings I wasn't able to build up until you showed up with some extra cash, income of your own, more frugal ways/anti-frittering policy.
HER: OK - that sounds nice dear. Maybe when we've bought a big house.
small number of years pass
ME: We've bought a big house now which includes a garage - now, I really must insist on suggesting we blow our savings on more fun car.
HER: If it's a convertible, it either has to be a foldy metal roof one or a keep the golf and get a classic as well, there's no place for canvas on a new car in this day and age - it dates it too much. Oh - and I hate BMWs with untold passion, everyone who drives them is arrogant, pushy and besides my ex and all his family drove them so they evoke a sense of dark and terrible dread in my heart.
ME: err... ok... leave it with me. (after some minutes...) What do you think of this Merc on autotrader. (Jan 2007)
6 months pass...

Current owner over 16 years, sounds fairly honest listing some faults.
Is the leather any good in these? Always hard to tell the quality from pictures.
