Been away on a truly dreadful holiday (so bad we jacked it in after three nights: never has home seemed so nice). But at least the transport was top notch. The new-to-me period roof rack held the bikes and the (very sad) colour-coded roof box firm at the ton, though the mpg was a little down on usual.

Is that the 300 Diesel? (Sportline?)

Must have been working fairly hard at 100 with that kit on top?

Do any of you barge owners find that you get used to having a lovely barge you take it for granted? I'm currently sat in a 1.2 corsa 2008 on a nearly 300 mile trip to North Wales and, the differences between it and my E65 are quite substantial.

The corsa is a fine car for what it's for but it's more noisy, cramped, less comfortable and much, much slower than the 745i!! Although it's harsh to compare, one can't help but do so. As a car to get you from A to B it's absolutely fine though but being in it has made me realise just HOW GOOD the 7 Series is at being a barge, it really is absolutely mega. Yet I still yearn for a V12.....

Im not alone in thinking this, am I?
No, but I'd find it hard to be in that situation - if the 745i was out of action did you not consider renting something more appropriate for the trip?
745i isn't out of action but my friend wanted to drive smile
Friend could have wanted to drive in the passenger seat if that was me - that's the kind of trip a 745 is built for!

Funnily enough "the first thing you might notice is the rear bumper" - er, no it wasn't. This should be in thread budget looking like that - £19k!!
Surely the guy has accidentally typed in too many 9's, it can't be more than £1999, can it?? It sounds horrendous, mucked around with, not pictured as it actually is now, and with those awful wheels! hurl
You know what someone said about Slough a few posts back, see also Huntingdon.

I mentioned a few pages back that I was on the hunt for v8 equipped estate and I was considering selling the x308. Well, my impulsive car buying nature has once again prevailed, just put a deposit down on this...

1998 e55, I know there isn't much love for the w210 on here but this looks to have been well looked after and is pretty much perfect for our family needs. Picking it up next Sunday and of course it's at the other end of the country, well not quite but 20 miles from Heathrow so as good as. Flying down and must say i'm looking forward to the drive back to Glasgow.

The other side of all this is that I now NEED to sell the x308. So if anyone is in the market for a well maintained 4.0 then give me a shout. Pulling an advert together tomorrow. I'm sure Ross will vouch for me wink

Looks great. I could be tempted into one of those if my 124 love ever fades. Do let us know how you get on with it.

That looks great. I do like the looks of the estates and they ride well enough from the ones I have been in. What's the rust situation?! I had a beer with a chap yesterday that claimed he'd acquired a rust free E430 - the V8 in these appeals.

I presume he bought it with magic beans as a load logger to take bushels of hen's teeth to his unicorn farm.

+1 been looking at these a lot, recently, to cover fast estate duties!

It's had a lot of bodywork professionally done, two new front wings recently, no rust anywhere on the body which as we know is rare on the w210. It's done 114000 miles so not moon miles and has a recent gearbox fluid and filter change so should be good for a while yet.

What engine you after?
Well, I've always wanted a V8...
I can confirm that the 4.8 has a decent turn of pace.

Gosh, was over 2 years ago now that about half a dozen of us in this thread bought 9-5s. Was a lot of dodgy Saab press at the time too. Seems that yours has served you well!
Yep, has been a very good car and hasn't cost me much other than routine servicing. I don't mind if it gets repaired and I don't mind if it's written off. Not a bad place to be in I guess.

I did ask him how many pints he'd had smile - I don't think I've seen a non rusty one for about 5 years.

Excellent. The estates do seem to be more rust resistant particularly in dark colours, not rust resistant enough but better than the saloons.

On a serious note that sounds good - I hope the trip goes well. I do like these old AMG barges.

Did they do a browny/orangey paint colour?!

Two tone with silver, I think it was a designo option chosen by most buyers.

Conversely I love nipping around Cardiff in the wife's Yaris. It has a superior ride quality, brake and steering feel and gearchange to my 9-5 aero. And you can appreciate the lighter weight on roundabouts.

But once the roads get faster the aero is superb.

Rather off topic my first car was a Yaris 1.0, great little thing and very underrated. If you look on Autotrader there are lots about that have done silly mileages. Compared to the competition back in the day the little 1.0 vvti was a sweet thing to rev and gear changes were good.

Saw this in the bargain basement thread, but it was such a traditional barge I thought it belonged here as well. Owned by a PH'er as well! (not me, I hasten to add) tongue out
