I went to Carmarthen and back yesterday in a w140 S420. 800miles. 20mpg. Almost £300 of petrol. Two speeding tickets. A stiff neck. And total exhaustion. Not a great ad for barging.
Ooof. A costly day out!

Ouch

Nicely placed just after all the LPG talk too!

Ref channel crossing, plenty of memories on the various ferries, cats etc. All awful and spent many a morning/afternoon/whole night chucking up. Awful. In any of the times I've driven abroad myself, I've not even considered a ferry much as the Octane style black tie breakfast thing appeals.

I could get quite defensive over LPG. So I will:
Just wanted to say that even though I probably never will fit LPG to a car (and don't really know why) I thought that was a splendidly coherent, persuasive and eloquent post.

It was the LPG talk that made me post. The thing that has always bothered me about LPG is that there is an inevitable compromise between boot space (which is quite important to me) and tank capacity.

On an unrelated topic, this might be of interest to some posters here: http://www.petrolicious.com/owning-a-bmw-leads-to-...

For context (and ok, a teeny bit of gloating), the same journey in my XJS or E320 would have cost £105.

Admittedly that's at 70-80mph, not the 110mph you were probably doing.

I'll shrewdly invest the £195 saved in bread, milk, children's shoes and my mortgage.

Rockin'.

How do you know you've get two speeding tickets so soon? Didn't think camera fines were that quick. Were you pulled over twice by traffic cars?

Whilst on the subject of LPG, I know that LPG'd vehicles are not permitted passage in the Eurotunnel, but can they sail on cross-channel ferries?

Having always used the tunnel as the easiest, quickest and often cheapest way onto the continent, my experience of ferry travel is limited.
No problem taking LPG on the ferry.

The tunnel argument is oft-cited. If you were to- and fro- all the time, then its a persuasive argument.

If it's only once a year, then you'd have to be a guy who would willingly buy a tunnel ticket for £2000 over a ferry ticket for £100 in order for it to be a credible reason not to LPG your barge.

Because that £2000 is staying in your pocket if you run LPG all year and take the ferry. So in my little world its very definitely a case of

"Splice the mainbrace, love, and don't eat those sardines - you won't enjoy them on the way back up."

It's tempting.

(Good point, though.)

Well now focussed on my trip south on Sunday. All this talk of mpg, I've been getting 19.7mpg average about town in the xj8. I'm interested to see what I get from the e55 on the run back to Glasgow (all going well), I'd be happy with 25mpg. Took the plunge and placed an advert for the Jag. If only I could keep the two of them.
Good luck.... My leisurely commute to work:

That's not too bad. I guess these cars aren't quite as heavy as the "big" barges like 7 series, S class, XJ and A8s etc?

Keep us updated cat220 on the new car!

Roughly 1500kgs so yeah a bit lighter. Feels like a big heavy car to drive though.

I can't do LPG as you can't take it through the Tunnel, and I refuse to go on nasty, wobbly, smelly, barfy, yucky, stinky, 3.14key, sicky-wicky ferries now that the tunnel exists. Bah.
learn something new every day.

Before you do it though, check where your nearest filling station is! They are very thin on the ground where I am

With regards to the above, do double check on the availability of LPG in your area.

I deliver LPG, and I go to some very remote places. These very small stations aren't always well publicised and usually not on LPG apps.

There is always the option to have a tank fitted in your own garden.

I've drove a few converted cars, and if done properly then I can't tell if it's running on petrol or gas.

Hope this helps.

PS with a bit of thought, it is normally quite easy to hide the LPG filler cap. Nothing worse than seeing it on the rear wing of a decent motor.

While on the subject of fuel consumption, converted my km/l to mpg (UK) just to see. My e38 750, maily short trips, 70/30 town-motorway returns 14,5 l/km, which is 19.48 mpg. Not good, but hell, it could be alot worse, I could be in a cramped, comfortless and noisy box of a car, but no, i'm inside an all leather clad V12-powered very good looking big ass saloon biggrin

Having said that I just remembered that I had a fuel bill of over £400 this month... new car to me, and a lot of just driving around for fun is not cheap...

I've seen photos of the LPG filler inside the petrol filler flap so totally invisible from the outside.

Well, I am not 100% sure but I tend to be pessimistic about these things. The first one was on the M62 in the dead of night in the variable speed limit zone. The variable limit was not active so I thought I was "safe" but there was a double flash as I whizzed under one gantry at bang on 100 (which, let's face it, is hardly fast on a motorway in the middle of the night in a S-Class Mercedes). The second was coming up the A483 yesterday afternoon. Doing my best to clear a line of slow traffic in a short overtaking lane near Wrexham, a camera van hoved into view as I rounded a bend. Speed was 75. Hopefully I was on the brakes quick enough (I'd say I was under the limit within two seconds of becoming visible to the van) but who knows, I have been pushing my luck on these long journeys of late. Sometimes I just want to get home.

Ach. You'll be all right. Only two weeks to sweat on the NIPs.

Will do Ross, just hope it all goes to plan. Stuck the Jag on Pistonheads and Car and Classic so hoping that moves pretty quickly.
