The body kit is, er, certainly of its time... but I have to agree, it's got something about it smile

Right, let's all move onwards and post some barges.

Regarding the 53 plate E320 posted above:

I believe that what you have to look out for on these is the Valeo radiator. Some later cars have a different radiator (I forget the OEM name) but the cooling system on cars with the Valeo item is connected in some way to, or via, the gearbox and the bork is that the coolant can get into the gearbox and completely shag it.

At some point they changed the cooling system. It was either very late in the pre-facelift (2005) or on the facelift cars (mostly 56 plate onwards).

Also on the pre-facelifts I think there is some fancy linked braking system to be aware of. I think that is less expensive to sort out when it borks, but that again was removed on later cars.

If you are looking at the E500 (I know you're not but anyway...) these have air suspension as standard which never lasts forever. I've seen 320s and 350s with it fitted but I think it was an option on the 6 cyl cars.

I would however buy a W211 (?) E Class, particularly the later facelift cars as they are supposed to be very good as the various issues I have commented on above were designed out. Or so I understand it, anyway.

Not sure if the CLK counts as a barge, but I think some if not all of the points above apply to that car too.
Quite a few models were fitted with the Valeo radiator, I have just replaced one on my W211 as it was showing some symptoms of gearbox slip (problem is oil cooler and rad cross contaminate) good as gold now for sub £150 total spend. Spot it in time and it is a cheap enough fix.

Production was split between the Valeo rads and Behr so some cars even being of the correct age may not be effected.

I did buy a W211 E-class and it is a great car, I suspect that MB were trying to undo some of the damage inflicted by rusting W210s so went all in on the 211

Tell me something like ALL parts on that Gloria are NLA....because for £3K that does have a massive allure!

Turn up anywhere in that and you are never going to be short of a topic of conversation with folk?

I quite like that!

Has a bit of an X-Files look about it?

Thanks for the heads up. I'm looking at the W211 and CLK as a potential buy in the next couple of months...

Yep, it was described as 'over-polished' which seemed to be an odd comment.

Hello? Did someone mention my name?

560 will do 156mph with ease. It's also rock solid in a straight line. Gosh I miss my SEC.

Something about those W126s.... So much class it's unreal. Not sure what else offers as much class these days?

As you all probably know I'm a big fan of all the current Rolls Royce models, and whilst they're classy, they're a bit.... Brash in some ways I just don't think the W126 is.

I fully agree with you here - I think I'd want to run the car above as a second car rather than a daily, but then it is under £2k!

I tell you what...it may have! laugh

I paint these little pictures in my mind of turning up at work in cars...amongst all the lease-plan X5s and 520Ds of my colleagues:

Q. "So what are you driving these days, Derin?"

A. "Oh, I went with the...er....2006 Nissan Gloria...."

Plus any car with the name "Gloria" is gonna get my vote!

I spent a night with a girl called Gloria on a student flat floor back in 1983....Yes, I'm sure it was '83.

She was very..."reluctant", shall we say. However, some "persistence" yielded "results" before sunrise. Over the years, I've found that dogged persitence, in all matters in life, often pays dividends. Professionally, cars etc etc. "Semper Contende"...that's my motto! "Always Keep Striving!

It was only some years after the event that I found out that her "reluctance" was due to the fact that she was a lesbian.

Yet, I'm still firmly and unshakeably of the belief that this was a decision she'd already made long before the event........rather than after!

Kudos. Good car and good to hear the purchasing gamble paid off in style.
I have just booked a ticket to go and buy Cat220's XJ this Saturday. I hope I am too am afforded some good luck on another barge thread purchase. The journey up there doesn't sound too arduous. Train to Newcastle in the morning, then one East Coast Rail to Edinburgh, then a transfer to Glasgow Queen Street shortly afterwards. About three hours all in. All being well, drive back should be a serene shuffle down the A74 and A69 to home.

Then, hopefully, I can stop moaning at the wife about having to drive her to car to work!

EDIT: Just one quick question regarding insurance, but what is the best way to go about arranging it for the day? In the past when I've been intending on buying a car, I usually ring my insurer and they put the prospective car onto my policy for a month and keep my current car insurer, then the next month I typically switch the policy to cover the new car as the primary insured vehicle and keep my old car on as a second vehicle until it sells.

Is there a cheaper way to sort the insurance short of just changing outright on the day? As confident as I am when I go to look at cars I expect to end up buying, it would be a costly mistake to change the policy outright before a test drive, only to not end up buying the car and having to change it back. Costs in these cases have typically been around £30 for a month of insuring both cars, and the last time I did it was when I had my A8 and my Impreza. Day insurance is typically more expensive.

Thanks for all the positive comments re the w210.

Bit of a bump for Baryonyx as his post seemed to be lost in all the e38 nonsense chat. Looking forward to meeting you Saturday!

I agree, seems like something one should own for a little while in a car life.
